Our Ideas & Additional Information
More info at http://www.pipnjay.org/documents/Logotournament-ExtraInfo.pdf

Our favourite church logos are simple and distinctive.

We want to be unmistakably about Jesus. The cross is an enduring and widely recognised symbol which represents Jesus’ most important work we are called to share in. The logo doesn’t HAVE to include a cross (if you can think of another symbol which works, great!) but we love fresh, distinctive and simple symbols which remind us of Jesus.

We do, however, want to avoid clichés such as old fashioned-looking crucifixes, a cross on a hill at sunset, crosses on a church building, radiating halos, globes or things which look more like clinical hospital logos than something for a connecting community.

We also want to avoid community logo clichés such as stick figures jumping or holding hands.

The logo mark must scale down well to be recognisable even as a fairly small icon, so please no high-res detail or overly delicate textures.

We are currently happy using Lato Ultra-Bold 900 for the words “Pip n Jay Church”, and the logo mark should sit next to the church name, which might change in the future, in any orientation (e.g. next to, above or below the name).

Our current “vision logos” use circles as common elements - they are at http://www.pipnjay.org
Other logos we like:
Bethlehem Baptist Church - http://www.hopeingod.org/
City Church of Olive Branch, Mississippi - http://www.citychurchob.com/

First bits of general feedback - thanks to everyone considering and offering stuff so far! Gathering people is our main intention, and we've put some good examples of logos we like which depict this well at http://www.pipnjay.org/documents/Logotournament-ExtraInfo.pdf - please have a look through these. We can unintentionally put people off being gathered if we look too spiky or aggressive. For this reason, ideas which look too much like targets or which have very sharp points to them aren't quite what we are after. Looking forward to more and thanks again!

Hello! Here are some hints for getting the most out of your contest as it progresses:

~~ You, the Client, are very important! Your active participation is the single greatest factor influencing this contest. Active participation by you, the Client, helps you get the logo design you want!
~~ What's active participation? It's updating the brief with more information for Designers to work with as the contest progresses, providing feedback to Designers on their entries when they're submitted, and ranking designs at least once a day.
~~ When you provide feedback to Designers, you increase the chances of getting the logo you want. More feedback = better results!
~~ Leave private feedback by clicking on a design. Feedback will be made public upon contest completion.
~~ Rank designs at least once each day -- this will encourage Designers to submit more entries!
~~ Ranking prevents your contest from going idle! Active contests attract more Designers.
~~ Ranking gets your contest noticed. Unless your contest is Private, 1st place entries are posted to the portfolio page: https://logotournament.com/portfolio
~~ Please note: if you're asking for a design that will require several hours to create, to attract Designers willing to invest that amount of time the prize should be at least $400-$500. All "Character" style logos fall into this category.
~~ Designers are not offended by "Not Interested." We'd like to know what you don't want so we can give you the design you do want.
~~ The first phase of the contest is the "Open" phase, and everyone can submit during that time.
~~ After your contest's initial "Open" phase closes, it will enter the "Top 5" phase; only the top 5 ranked Designers will be able to submit revisions at that time.
~~ The "Top 5" Designers are the first 5 Designers in a contest, not the first 5 designs.
~~ When "Top 5" ends, the "Judging" phase begins. The Designer of the 1st place design will be the only Designer who can submit revisions at that time.

More detailed information on how to get the most out of your contest can be found here:

We're coming to realise that shields are probably not ideal for us - they look defensive while we want to be open and welcoming! Having said that, you're coming up with clever twists we could never have thought of, so please keep the ideas coming.

Still loving the range of ideas coming in, and would like to encourage you that we are giving specific feedback to everyone as we go. Ultimately we're looking for as simple a logo as possible, but I can see that some good ideas are starting out as complex shapes and then might be simplified later. We're really happy to make suggestions about this, and very much appreciate the work you are putting in. Best wishes - Bern @ Pip n Jay

Thanks for today's new ideas. Our intention in the brief is that we are about embodying Jesus, following him and gathering together, and it's great to see imaginative ideas which convey all of this as simply as possible. We've encouraged things which remind us of a cross, but are open to other meaningful symbols. One approach we would love to see tried is to think "3" or "5" instead of "4" for a few ideas. 3 means a lot to Christians because we believe God to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 5 is also important for us as we make practical use of 5 gifts from Jesus which he gave us for building his church. On the last day of open contest, it would be great to see some 3-part or 5-part ideas which also meet the brief. Best wishes - Bern @ Pip n Jay

Hello, your highest ranked logos seem to all have abstract people in them. Is this the direction you're looking for in your logo? I'm trying to understand how you want to differentiate your church from the others.

Kind Regards

Hi cpd - the brief is that what we do, primarily, is "gather people..." and showing that we connect people and help people follow Jesus are two of the three things we wrote that we wanted to convey in the logo. There are lots of potential ways to show this, but figures which suggest people is certainly one. I'll pass feedback about your designs to you personally as per contest guidelines. Thanks!

Last day! General feedback is that before we can pick the winner, we are putting the top contenders into context at our end - how would we use these logos? The simplest designs are definitely the most usable, although distinctiveness is also essential in the logo itself. The general contexts in which we will use the logo are described in the brief, but more specific examples include Powerpoint presentations where want to share a few memorable points with an audience, Christmas invitations, brochures and animations which can tell a visual story. The most important story we'll tell is about who we are, what we do and why. We're excited about the potential for lots of these designs, and now we're focusing to find the perfect execution. Thanks again! Bern

Thanks to everyone for amazing ideas. We are really going to have a hard time judging the winner, which will take a few days while we look at examples of how some of the logos will look in context. We expect to decide the winner on the afternoon (UK time) of Monday 17th June. Meanwhile, please keep your ideas up - we appreciate them, and I know some in the church are likely to want to invite you to pitch for other things in the future. Any questions, please ask, and thanks again. Bern

Final thanks to everyone as we close the contest. The whole team is grateful for an incredible range of ideas, and several of you have been noted for future contact by people on the team who may be seeking other logos in future. We'll publish more soon about the winning design and why we chose it at our website, http://www.pipnjay.org - please feel free to contact us through there if you have any queries after the contest finally shuts down here. We wish you all the best for your amazing future work and thank you again for everything you posted here. Bern
