Color Preferences
We're pretty open. As we mention below, we'd like a logo influenced by WPA art -- so some of the deep reds, blues, greens, and browns appeal to us.
Our Ideas & Additional Information
We're in a refurbished Mill, so we like the idea of an industrial look. We specifically like the style of WPA (U.S. Works Progress Administration, 1930s) art -- something emphasizing the work and industry of both our writers, but also the people who worked here before. We like some of the mechanical elements in WPA posters -- stylized cogs, gears, keys of a typewriter, and that sort of thing. We've attached a few WPA posters we liked, along with another group's logo. Obviously, we don't just want a reproduction of this aesthetic, but something that's inspired by it.

Since we're a group of assorted, mostly creative types, we want the logo to be a little edgy, and not too sleek, not too like a multinational brand. I suppose a pharmaceutical logo is probably the opposite of what we want.

We'd like something with color but it needs to work for occasional b/w reproduction as well.

Do you have a picture of the mill you could share with us?

Thanks Loquaz -- yes, there are a few on our (very basic) web site: www.writersmill.org

Our offices are only part of a much larger complex.

Here are a few more:

The current logo on the web site uses an image of the whole complex taken from 19th-century letterhead.

These are looking great -- thanks to everyone. One pedantic note: we definitely want the apostrophe in the name, and after the "s." So "The Writers' Mill."

Hey all -- thanks for the great work. Many of you have come up with clever visual puns using pens and pencils. But I just wanted to say that since "writers" is in the name, we don't *need* to have that. Playing off the industrial/WPA style is fine without the explicit reference to writing.

We're all very pleased with the designs so far. One thing we agree on is that we'd like to see more that put greater emphasis on the typography and less on the illustration. In the end, the image could play a supporting role to the words.

Since lots of people have drawn off the image of pens and pencils, what about a typewriter? (Not that we're wedded to the idea -- as I say above, I don't think we necessarily need a visual to represent writing.)

Also, we'd love to see more drawing off the colors from some of the WPA art we submitted.

Thanks again to everyone -- the designs are fantastic, and far beyond what we expected.

Just wanted to emphasize to everyone that even though we like a few logos with orange, we're open to lots of colors. As I said in the original brief, we like some of the bright, deep colors of the WPA posters we submitted. So feel free to try blues, greens, reds, yellows, and so on.

Thanks again to everyone for your fantastic entries. We won't announce a winner immediately, since we're conferring with our members. But we'll let you know as soon as possible.
