Our Ideas & Additional Information
something with a vintage look could be cool. the timeless nature of vintage mixed in with cutting edge "web 2.0". By vintage, i mean the usage of fonts or styling that gives it an old world cool. By cutting edge 2.0, it needs to be able to used easily on a website and scaled down in size.

Please stay away from emblems, many of the entries have been like "badges". I really would like to see creative text with a unique abstract mark combination. Again, the mark needs to be scalable and able to be used in various forms of media.

Hi,
just in case you didnt know you can give individual feedback on any of the designs on this page by clicking the logos. this takes you to that designers page where you can also see any comments they have made on their image while uploading.

doing things this way is much easier for us as we dont have to wade through resposes in the general area to find our own specific feedback. It also allows you to give much more detailed feedback which ultimatly results in you getting a better result.

thanks!

All the entries too far have not impressed me. I need something much more sophisticated and professional. No offense to any of the efforts so far, but keep on trying.

Well, the competition has just started and in my experience the most interesting time is when it's about 2 days left. Then the submissions usually start pouring in.

When you say 'cutting edge "WEB 2.0" ', I become a little confused since a majority of those logos are made with Photoshop or similar bitmap applications. Illustrator can mimic part of these nifty glossy-gradient styles, but far from 'cutting edge', in my opinon.

LT refers to WEB 2.0 as "vibrant colours, subtle 3d feel, bold type, color transitions, and shadows."

Please state, in your opinion, what your perception of WEB 2.0 is. It would be helpful.

yea it will take a while for good designs to come in,
"something with a vintage look could be cool. the timeless nature of vintage mixed in with cutting edge web 2.0" - is not easy =)

Folks, I def need logos that are more traditional/standard and come across professional. The submissions so far have been less than inspiring. I like the work the #1 person on this site has done, https://logotournament.com/logodesigners/carrion

If you could articulate a little better what you want it will help us -- and you -- tremendously.
• "Vintage mixed in with cutting edge Web 2.0" is admittedly a challenge. Vintage fonts? Vintage colors? Both?
• "More traditional/standard and come across professional." Traditional/standard how?
• "The submissions so far have been less than inspiring." In what way? If we're missing the mark, explain the mark and we'll work harder to hit it.
• Carrion is a fantastic designer. Most of Carrion's best work came from back-and-forth feedback/input with the contest holder.
Please -- help us help you. The more you clarify what you want to convey, the better we can all interpret and execute. I promise.

Sorry folks, I'm in the middle of a cross country move and haven't been able to keep up with this as much as I would like too. Plus, the site doesn't give me notifications when new comments are made so it's hard to reply to each comment you make.

I edited the brief a little, but I will do my best to help refine things.

+ I am looking for a logo combination of text and an abstract mark, not an emblem or a badge (which many submissions have been so far)

+ By web 2.0, I am referring more to the context in which the logos are used. My understanding of web 2.0, as far as branding goes, refers to logos that are simple but distinctive. Often these logos make creative marks with very little room and space due to the nature of their usage. Although "Brand Marinade" is not a web 2.0 technology, etc. the usage of the mark will need to be confined to small spaces at times. Hence, it needs to be simple enough to scale down while remaining distinctive and comprehensible. This is an interesting link on web 2.0 design, http://www.webdesignfromscratch.com/web-2.0-design-style-guide.php

+ Vintage. When I think of vintage, I think of textures and fonts. The logo should be built and the vintage should be part of the final touch to add some character to it. I really like entry #19 by A-ha but restructured as a wordmark plus an abstract mark rather than an emblem. The usage of a vintage font is great, but it needs to be scalable (marinade will get lost) and I do not get the luxury of a brand mark.

Here's a little about the business and the concept of Brand Marinade.

+ I am will be working with various popular hip-hop artists - managing, designing, producing and fulfilling their merchandising efforts. They have their own brands established/establishing and all I am doing is helping them extend their brands into new areas. Sort of adding some new flavor (and revenue stream) to their existing brands. Just like adding a marinade to some chicken or a steak - it gives the meat just a little more flavor.
+ I will also be consulting with clothing companies, helping with their overall execution of their business. The nuts and bolts. They know how to brand themselves and market, but I come in with ways to refine their business model from operations to sales channels. Again, just adding a little flavor to their already established brands.

My logo needs to convey a little of that if possible. I am looking for something designed simply with the web 2.0 design concepts but with an added flavor of vintage - as though it's been marinating for some time.

Hope that helps you wrap your brains around the concept a little more.

here's some feedback I want to share with people regarding entry #23 by dotwoman.

when i see the abstract mark she created above (the abstract circle/square with the "B" inside), i'm trying to decipher and interpret it because i think she may be onto something...

if the "B" stands out in the mark, inside of the "shape" - it represents a generic iconic logo/brand. the "shape" that the "B" sits inside is the marinade.

what i am looking to do with Brand Marinade is take existing brands (the "B") and add something to them, albeit new sales channels, operational efficiencies, connections to new markets etc.

The "B" sits inside of the "M" - if that makes any sense. "B" stands out and is obvious but the object/icon "M" that it sits within is a little more abstract.

That, in my opinion, would be a great abstract mark when combined with a word mark.

Sorry, all. I made a comment about another entry. It's not allowed. Even positive ones,
as mine was. Supposed to make those on the designer's pages. That's the rule.

here is tip for the ranking system, that will be a positive spin on your contest. no designer should ever contact you to have all there design ranked in e top 4 posts..this is both unethical and not fair to all the other designer who have invested time into your contest.

April 18th, 2009, 9:05pm Ranking System

This post was used on a different competition to highlight some rules of the LT (previously posted by Dazzle - Moderator for LT)

How are you doing ? hope you are doing great. As this contest is about to come to an end, and you will be chosing the best new logo for your company, i just wanted to have your attention to some important point that you might be aware of or might not. I hope i am not miss understood by pointing out this to you and that you understand.

When the contest ends and you have made your mind and desicion about the winner logo, the winner gets the 1st place, but the 2nd and 3rd place and going on forward, 4th, 5th, 6th , etc , each one or slot should be filled with a seperate designer and different concept you found second best, third best to follow etc.

This helps towards us designers ranking and also it is a way from you to show your appreciation to the hard effort and trails put from the beginning by one designer or appreciating a nice design concept put earlier by a designer that led to developing on right direction for others and you getting the best you could at the end.

It feels frasturating for other designers and pointless of giving all the top rankings for same winner designer, while those were just a small variations of the winning design and therefore the other places 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc are not filled with different designs from a different designer.

So i hope you understood my point i was just trying to point out to you here and all the best of luck in chosing your winner logo, there are really good ones out there.

please take a moment to rank your contest in fair and just manner..it will go along way when you decide to start another....simply because more designers will participate if they know a contest will be judged fairly.

Best Regards,

designers...i want to thank everyone in advance. this has been an amazing process and am excited to be a part of something so "revolutionary". your efforts are the single most important aspect that makes this so revolutionary. as someone who has been in the creative and entrepreneurial realms for some time, this was part experiment (although the logo will indeed be used!) just to see if the concept lived up to me expectations. so far, it has exceeded it. so THANK YOU.

i was unaware i should be ranking more. what is the advantage?

i was on the road since the competition ended and since then about 50% or more people withdrew their entries so many of the one's i would have ranked are gone already.
