Our Ideas & Additional Information
This is not a typical logo project. I am looking for a design idea for the barcodes that would be used on our labels. See http://www.barcoderevolution.com/gallery/index.php?c=all for useful examples.
Must comply with GS1 standards. We will be using EAN-13 barcodes.

The attached document would need to be cleaned uo, but possibly a row of our bottles with the barcode in the middle.

Second post is the current design of the label. The back label is where the bar code will be. Probably at the bottom at a yet to be created white space with the Alcohol Warning.

Are you aware that the barcode you provided scans to an album? http://www.google.com/m/products?q=9771473968012

Is that just a placemark code for now?

Yes, sorry. The first code is attached as eps file. 6009802274002 the 2006 vintage, 6009802274019 - 2007, 6009802274026 - 2008, 6009802274033 - 2009 vintages.,

Generally, I seem to be reacting to designs that take the barcode outside of it's little banded box shape, yet remain true to barcode standards so it will actually work and/or a human can find and input the number if it does not scan properly.
Hope you are enjoying a different kind of logo contest.

Designers, don't be put off by the GS1 standards guidelines in my brief. We can work out the final details, if required, once I have selected your design. Basically use black lines on a white background for the critical barcode section. Because most scanners use red lasers, some red background might also be acceptable. Other than having a clear bar code area with a white backgound, the rest of the design can use colors.
The caveat to that is it will go on our label which has gold border, black background and white lettering. Our logo / name is gold foil. Also, every additional colour on my label costs money.
As you can from the examples on the website cited in the brief, you have a lot of freedom after that.

Some designers are adding the SAWIS warning into their designs. For the benefit of all: I need to put one of the following on the back label. Requirement is Black type on a white background. You don't need to incorporate that into your design, but if it helps you to create a cohesive barcode image, great. Personally, I like the last and first the best.
==========BELOW IS FROM SAWIS GUIDELINES===============
"Use any one of the messages below. The first three are preferred.

Alcohol reduces driving ability, don't drink and drive.
Drinking during pregnancy can be harmful to your unborn baby.
Alcohol abuse is dangerous to your health.
Alcohol increases your risk to personal injuries.
Alcohol is a major cause of violence and crime.
Alcohol is addictive.
Don't drink and walk on the road, you may be killed."

Designers - One more thing about Franschhoek (where our little farm is) you may not know is that it is a foodie mecca. There are more top drawer restaurants in that little town than you could spend a month of lunch and dinners enjoying. So maybe the barcode is a napkin in a place setting or a placemat or .....

Designers - Ok, you're all scaring me. Love the designs, but we want people to drink MY wine, not to scare the bejesus out of them and turn them into teetotallers.
Also, any winning designs need to work with me to make the barcode readable.

Designers - No one has taken me up on my original brief, which suggested a collection of line drawn bottles with the barcodes embedded in the middle. Perhaps some of you have tried and do not like the results?
My wine has a black label. Inverting the colour scheme may also be the way to go, which is why you see the black background entries ranked higher.
I can see after some of the recent entries this is more difficult than I imagined. Thanks for trying.

Thanks all for some fabulous work and interesting ideas. I'm torn between whimsical and serious. Generally, the woodcut or line drawn images are catching my eye. A cohesive image incorporating barcode is winning out over entries that look like graphics have simply been pasted on top.

One more image that might work.
Something similar to http://www.featurepics.com/online/Corkscrew-Cork-1459825.aspx
Have the image horizontal like shown, put the year on the end of the cork, just like we do. Have the bar code, go vertical (so it is at an angle to the cork). Maybe make the corkscrew itself gold to match the label gold.

ALL.
Thanks again. Bare with me as I rank, and move the images around. The top ten will represent my ten favorites (even if they were not commercially viable options adhering to strict barcode standards). After that, I will try to group each decile as a separate ranking, keeping out duplicate or similar images from the same artist.
