Our Ideas & Additional Information
The name of the newetter is "The Chapel Hill Letter", meaning Chapel Hill, North Carolina. As an option you could try a log that evokes the town of Chapel hill, because it is a beautiful town.
I particuarly like logos that have the actual title or some form of wordmark. See the attachment for some logos I admire. If you include a banner graphic, please make sure it is 900 pixels wide so it can form the banner of a website.
The logo will be used online and offline, so please supply a banner version for online and a narrower non-banner version for offline newsletters, letterheads etc.

Hello! Here are some hints for getting the most out of your contest as it progresses:

~~ You, the Client, are very important! Your active participation is the single greatest factor influencing this contest. Active participation by you, the Client, helps you get the logo design you want!
~~ What's active participation? It's updating the brief with more information for Designers to work with as the contest progresses, providing feedback to Designers on their entries when they're submitted, and ranking designs at least once a day.
~~ When you provide feedback to Designers, you increase the chances of getting the logo you want. More feedback = better results!
~~ Leave private feedback by clicking on a design. Feedback will be made public upon contest completion.
~~ Rank designs at least once each day -- this will encourage Designers to submit more entries!
~~ Ranking prevents your contest from going idle! Active contests attract more Designers.
~~ Ranking gets your contest noticed. Unless your contest is Private, 1st place entries are posted to the portfolio page: https://logotournament.com/portfolio
~~ Please note: if you're asking for a design that will require several hours to create, to attract Designers willing to invest that amount of time the prize should be at least $400-$500. All "Character" style logos fall into this category.
~~ Designers are not offended by "Not Interested." We'd like to know what you don't want so we can give you the design you do want.
~~ The first phase of the contest is the "Open" phase, and everyone can submit during that time.
~~ After your contest's initial "Open" phase closes, it will enter the "Top 5" phase; only the top 5 ranked Designers will be able to submit revisions at that time.
~~ The "Top 5" Designers are the first 5 Designers in a contest, not the first 5 designs.
~~ When "Top 5" ends, the "Judging" phase begins. The Designer of the 1st place design will be the only Designer who can submit revisions at that time.

More detailed information on how to get the most out of your contest can be found here:

Hello, denisthornton,

You stated:
"If you include a banner graphic, please make sure it is 900 pixels wide so it can form the banner of a website."

Designers are not allowed to submit anything more to you than the logo design itself, as that would violate the terms of service of this site. Designers can only upload a logo that will be used for a banner ad later on. Also, please note: any Designer who promises you a banner ad for free before the contest is over, without extra cost to you, would also be violating the terms of service of this site, and could be banned from the site as a result.

Here is an aspect you may not be aware of: all submissions in this contest are derived from vector graphic files. Meaning any logo you see can be resized to a large size and a small size without loss of quality. Vector images are not like JPG or PNG images; when you resize a JPG or PNG you lose visibility and the image gets 'jagged edges.'

When you resize a vector graphic such as an EPS or an AI file, you do not have any loss of quality. Images can be sized down to a tenth the size of a penny or twice as large as a billboard -- or larger -- and never lose any visibility or quality in the process. Please note: an EPS file is exactly what you will receive when the contest ends.

So if you are concerned with sizing issues, if a logo will fit a banner ad size, et cetera...you need not worry. The winning logo can be resized without loss of quality by a competent Designer after the contest ends, due to the fact that you will be in posession of a vector file (an EPS). The images here are only PNG and JPG for the sake of display, not for the sake of transfer. A final file transfer is a whole other thing.

Any charge for that banner ad creation would need to be discussed after the contest ends, and not before.

We hope you understand our position, and the reason why these limits are in place. Primarily, it is to prevent 'back door deals' and favoritism of one Designer over another to procure a win.

We hope you have a great day, and wish you the best of luck with your contest.

Jennifer - I did not ask for a banner ad. I asked for a banner for my website, i.e. a logo that, if it has a graphic background, can stretch to fill the full width of my website header.

Hello, denisthornton:

Then perhaps saying "I need a logo that will look good at the top of my site, when placed into a banner format" is more descriptive and more accurate.

As it stands now in your brief, stating "If you include a banner graphic" and then immediately after that "please make sure it is 900 pixels wide so it can form the banner of a website" implies that you need/prefer/expect Designers to submit a banner graphic -- whether it's an ad or not -- in addition to their logo submissions.

Please update the brief to better state your expectations.

Thank you for submitting your entries. The standard is terrific.
Just an additional amendment to the brief:

I need a logo that will look good at the top of my site, when placed into a banner format, so please consider this in your designs.

thanks
