Color Preferences
Logo would generally appear over a black or dark background.
Logo would appear next to my own art, which often has highly saturated colors and darker tones.
Accordingly, I prefer a logo that's a bit less colorful, like generally grays with at most a splash of color.
Colors preferred:  grey, blueish-green, orange.
I would need a totally grayscale variation of any color logo.
Our Ideas & Additional Information
Before deciding I couldn't design this for myself, I considered things like:
Tree silhouette over a circle, "Magelight Photography" in simple typeface.
Text "Magelight" in a thin, curvey typeface with a little lens flare.

See http://magelight.org/ for example of current logo use.

I have a notion that I prefer "Magelight Photography" over just "Magelight", but I would be interested to see a few ideas explored on both approaches.

Discussion

Thanks to Nalapraja for a lovely interpretation of the tree idea.

At this early stage I would like to see another general approach or two get explored by the community. The tree idea I like, but I suspect that there's different elements that might also work well. I would suggest: think of things that represent finding magic and fantasy in nature, finding magic and fantasy in light.

More concretely, I think one thing that might appeal to me is designs that include a lot of visual balance, left to right, and designs that weave the word and glyph together in tight and interesting ways.

Please anyone let me know if there's some more useful form of feedback I could be leaving. And thanks all for your work. :)

Beautiful work, from everyone.

At the time I write this, I have basically two favorites that I'm very unsure which I like better: #16 and #8.

What I like most about #16 is that the lens part looks as much like a magical crystal ball as it does part of a camera. Anything that makes people think of magic is good imagery.

What I like most about #8 is it feels very sophisticated, which appeals to the fine art side that I want to represent.

One thought: my favorite logos are all pretty tall -- if I drew a box around them it'd be mostly square. One of the intended uses I have for a logo is a small watermark in the corner of a printed photo. A logo that's more rectangular, longer than it is tall, would be easier to use. I don't know how well this can be reconciled with my request for a visually balanced logo though. :)

Again, thanks everyone for your hard work. I appreciate it, these are all far more awesome than I ever imagined.

Oh! Also, if someone wants to try out another idea, how about something that depicts a person, a mage, casting a spell and creating light? :)

It dawns on me, I should have defined what "magelight" means. Sorry about that. :(

Definition of mage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magician_(fantasy)

Mage-light comes from that. In fantasy stories, a magelight is usually a glowing ball of pure energy that lights an area with a pure white light. They're created by magicians who don't want to bother with lighting candles.

Beautiful new designs, thanks all!

Remember I need to use this logo in grayscale as well. A couple of these designs seem a little less visually clear if converted to grayscale.

Thanks again. :)
