We'd like that to be a designer decision, informed by the fact that we would like to use the logo in the following ways:
1. In the top-left of our website.
2. As a branded signature in the footer of each of our client's websites (i.e. "powered by GeekSalt")
3. We'd like to use a portion of the logo as the favicon for all websites that we create.
4. If we ever require business cards, we'll use the logo there too, but this is less necessary.
For these reasons, although the logo will be colourful, we'll need a version that will work at low resolution (perhaps as low as 16px or 32px high) and that will work at the footer of a site regardless of its design.
Our Ideas and Additional Information:
We want to convey the fact that we're a couple of experienced engineers (geeks) who understand the needs of the restaurant industry, so our current placeholder logo is a stylised salt shaker next to a courier font, with the company name expressed as one word, perhaps with capitalised letters (as in "GeekSalt" or "geekSalt" or "geeksalt"). However, we are *very* open to any sort of interpretation that will work for our target market.

Diamond Contest
We're sorry, but this contest is presently open to a limited pool of designers.
Thanks for the hard work everyone! I hope it's clear that I'm only marking designs as "thanks, but no" to help guide your efforts... everyone's coming up with something that could work, and I know the final decision will be a difficult one (even though it's early days, and I expect things to evolve a lot from where we are now).
In general, it's clear I'm favouring icon on the left and text on the right, rather than the other placements that were suggested, and I think that's because we'll primarily use the logo in website navigation. It would be good to see more experimentation with colours and typefaces, and some non-literal interpretations (I'd love to be knocked sideways by an awesome design that comes out of left field but just feels completely *right*). Although an image that captures the tagline "seasoned with geeksalt" would also be appropriate - perhaps a salt shaker in the act of being used?
We're looking for a logo that can be used in site navigation, so something wider than it is tall with consistent height all the way across seems to work best. We don't want the tagline included as part of the logo design, and prefer something stylised and iconographic rather than detailed and shaded. Two flat colours seem to work well, such as the black/red and black/blue designs. And we'd like to see more interpretation and creative ideas from other angles - a salt shaker doesn't have to be part of the logo, and nor do a pair of glasses :)
Would someone like to try something similar to the FreshBooks logo (http://www.freshbooks.com/), with the leaf replaced with a salt shaker tilted on an angle to our out salt? Just a thought :)
Thanks for all the great new entries everyone! I cannot rank and comment now, but will do so tonight (in around six hours or so). Keep the ideas coming in!
It's getting late down here in Oz, so I won't be able to leave feedback or rank entries until tomorrow. I should be able to start that with about 10 hours remaining, and I expect the ranking to change a bit then (as I'll be involving my business partner, so I'll need to take another opinion into account). So please do check back to see whether things get shuffled. Right now there are five very strong contenders, and I wouldn't be surprised if a few more arose overnight. Thanks all for your hard work - it's been lots of fun at this end!
Good luck everyone! Unfortunately we won't be able to make an immediate decision on the winner, but we hope to have a decision within 24 hours of the contest closing.
We do not yet know which of the ranked logos will be chosen as the winner. It's a difficult decision!
