[ADDED 07/23/2010] COLORS Finalized... We've decided to go pure b/w on the logo for now, as we will foil imprinting the logo in gold.

Artists: You do not need to repost your entries unless you're revising. For all new entries and revisions, lets have all entries be in gold color used in entry #30 for both the emblem and the text with a solid black background for ease of visibility. Thanks! .................[ORIGINAL BRIEF INFO FOLLOWS].............
<<<PLEASE NOTE: While would like to see what creative color ideas the artists will come up with, we ARE NOT CONCERNED so much with color... (we can finalize near the end of the tournament or adjust this in-house later. WE ARE MAINLY CONCERNED WITH THE DESIGN SO PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS IN THIS CONTEXT AND FOCUS MORE ON DESIGN>>> For your reference, current interim business cards have text only in Century standard font (no logo) using these two PMS colors 483 brown for most text and a block (reverse cutout white lettering for the contact info) and PMS 648 for accent color on the company name 'Aurelian' printed on heavy 180 pound ivory paper stock. We like the brown 483, but are not tied to 648. Other PMS colors we like are 669 and 683 in conjunction with 483. THESE ARE THE COLORS THAT WILL PROBABLY BE AROUND THE LOGO/EMBLEM AND PERHAPS SHOULD BE INCORPORATED INTO THE LOGO, BUT NOT NECESSARILY. We want the artists to be creative with color but please keep these two rules in mind:
1) use only solid colors, no gradients or shading
2) Max 2 PMS colors that MUST be achievable both in CMYK and RGB
3) Whatever color(s) are used should translate into an excellent pure black and white as this is our main goal.
Our Ideas & Additional Information
The MAIN PURPOSE of the logo is to be used as a 'seal' or emblem on a business card (probably gold foiled), letterhead, and embossed onto leather goods, metal, etc. Please keep this in mind when designing. Ideally our logo would have all the following:
1) Can be used both as a 2-color logo in print, and one color in solid black/white. 2) Can be easily used (in B/w form) to emboss ,deboss, foil, or imprint. 3) Is intricate AND detailed, but not too busy. 4) Design may easily be adaptable from one shape (ie circle) to another (ie rectangle) without too much effort. 5) Any use of text/fonts must use a (preferably) standard serif font. 6) While we would like to use the logo for our website as well, this is not the main drive so the logo SHOULD NOT look too modern or too '3D'. >>>>>>>>>>>>> THE FOLLOWING IS OUR MAIN CONCEPT IDEA TO DATE THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO START OFF THE ARTISTS WITH:
A seal, emblem, utilizing a couple of the 'knots' or flower images attached (ie Fleur de Lis, Turkish tulip shape, Celtic knot, Korean knot). The design would interweave several of the design elements in a **FILIGREE DESIGN**, possibly incorporating the letter 'A' or 'Au' to represent "Aurelian". The idea / Concept is to use and mix symbols from east west and several cultures, and we welcome artistic creativity in additional design elements to be incorporated. We have two preferred emblem shapes and would like to see one version of each from each artist. A) a standard circle emblem, B) a rectangle emblem with approximate aspect ratio of width 1 x height 1.5 to 2 (ie an upright rectangle or 'chop' emblem). ***BE CREATIVE***: Mix and match the design elements, add your own that you feel would work, and please provide several versions featuring some to many of the design elements so we can comment. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

We would like to post a couple of general comments about the contest so far to help steer in the right direction:

[applies to entries #1 #2 #3 and #4] Generally, we would like to see more complexity than what has been submitted to date. Additional graphic elements interwoven, perhaps in a **Filigree** pattern, like silver filigree. We recognize that striking a balance between good complexity and being too busy is difficult.

>>>>>>>>>>>> Also, as a general point of feedback: We are beginning to recognize that the knots and floral elements may not be the easiest to combine into a seamless whole.... please try your best to interweave or combine them. The final product should be a wholistic unified logo where the graphic elements we provide tend to fade away from the viewer into the whole rather than be readily obvious. This may mean using a different articstic graphic and incorporating those elements INTO the structure or deconstructing the elements. FEEL FREE TO DECONSTRUCT OR GET INSIPIRATION FROM THE GRAPHIC ELEMENTS. USE A PIECE HERE A PIECE THERE AND WEAVE IT INTO A LATTICE OF ART AND FILIGREE!

We are starting to see entries in the 'Shield' shape, and welcome this. So please continue to submit emblems shaped as circle, rectangle (as in entries #3 and #8) and shield.

Also, the brief and numerous comments i've posted talk about using *FILIGREE* and weaving the elements. A perfect example of this look that we are looking for are the two entries by Mr Do, entries #18 and #19. While they still need work to integrate some additional elements, they are very good examples of what we want the final product to look like.

Thank you everyone!

UPLOADED A NEW FILE TO THE BRIEF with examples of lotus and carnation floral graphic elements we like... please use these to incorporate into your designs per the feedback. The new file has "v2 with revised flowers" at the end. It is the larger file. I kept the old file for reference only.

Also re-sorted the order of the graphic elements in the file to display flowers first, knots last as the knots seem to not be working as well. We still welcome any artists entries using the celtic square knot or triangular one, the tibetan knot, or the korean knot where you see fit artistically.
