Field guide to birds of the US
What We Do
The "US Birds" mobile application, to be released on iOS and Android devices, is a field guide to the birds of the United States, helping users to identify the birds they see by searching the bird database by name, colour, location and size.

Color Preferences
I would like the logo to reflect the rainbow spectrum, perhaps in a simplified way, using a limited range of colours from the spectrum but putting them in spectrum order perhaps. This is to highlight the unique colour search system in the app.

The logo picture needs to have a transparent background and it needs to look good against both a black background and a white background. The background needs to show through the abstract lines and shapes used to represent the bird.

The final files need to be EPS and PNG formats to accommodate the transparent background. A high resolution PNG file is required as part of the final set of files.

Please work with colours that will look the same on the screen and in print. If that is not feasible for some reason, let me know why the colour choice warrants the limitation.
Our Ideas & Additional Information
The logo should be rectangular with the image of the bird on the left and the text, "US Birds", to the right. It should be easy to remove the text so that the image of the bird on the left can be used in isolation for the app launch icon and in the Apple and Google Play app stores. The bird picture needs to look good as an app icon, shrinking effectively without losing meaning, and filling the available square space to a reasonable degree.

The bird image needs to be abstract, modern and dynamic, showing motion and grace. It should not be clearly identifiable as a specific bird species but should hint at ambiguity and the need for an identification to be made.

Note that the example fish logo is from the Lizard Island Fish Guide and meets the requirements of being abstract and modern and presenting well in a square format against white and black backgrounds at any scale.

The web version of the field guide can be accessed at

The hummingbird image files are intended to be an inspiration for form and colour.
The hummingbirds pictures in the field guide can be seen at:

While the hummingbirds have great form and colour, do not feel that they are the only bird species that the bird form can be based on. They are just for inspiration.

Thanks for all the creative submissions. The layout is important - bird on left and writing on right. Not bird above writing. Also the only writing should be "US BIRDS". Also the bird icon nerds to work alone as an app icon on a black and a white background.

To start, put time into the bird image. The text can be refined later. The bird needs to look realistic enough not to irritate bird enthusiasts (eg wings need to sweep in the right direction). It should also be drawn in a way that shows movement and grace - not blocky solidity.

Based on the entries so far, I think that the logo needs to be one of two things: either so abstract that birders do not get offended by structural inaccuracies or accurate enough that what the logo does show of a bird is in accordance with the knowledge of bird enthusiasts. The thing to avoid is something enough like a bird that it should be a picture of a bird, but the body structure is obviously wrong - e.g. insect-like wing placement, wings attached at the wrong body point, incorrect scaling of body parts, wings from one type of species stuck on the body of another type of species - that kind of thing.

Also, for now, to make things easier for everyone, just do entries on a white background. For those logos that get through to the next selection stage, we can experiment with the background variations etc.
