What We Do
Italian law firm in Trieste providing since almost one century legal assistance to any kind of client and for any kind of legal (judicial and non judicial) matter
Industry
Color Preferences
Blue (something like #120A8F and similar shades) OR Purple (something like #800080 and similar shades). If purple, please note that in Italian catholic culture purple vestments and paraments are used in mournful rites, and therefore it is very hard not to recall death and burials by using purple and black. Purple can be very original if the above mentioned risk is avoided. Blue is much more secure.
Our Ideas & Additional Information
STUDIO LEGALE means "law office" and GERIN is the family name of the founder (and of his son and grandson which are both lawyers, and the last is still working in the office).
Gerin is quite a name in town, and it can be graphically emphasized (not mandatory), but if so it must not be too stressed out, as we want to be considered a complete team.
Please AVOID standard and banal law/justice related images, like Scales of Justice, Lady Justice, Judge's Gavel (which is not, by the way, used in Italy) a.s.o. An idea could be to link our image to our town, which is a borderline town (in far East Northern Italy, near Slovenia) but in that case it must be VERY abstract (not mere silhouette of some monument or building) becouse we like to be identified as "hometown" lawyer by citizens of Trieste but we don't want to give to other customers the impression that we are too local (and, by the way, there is an exaggerated local pride in the nearest Italian cities). An other, different, idea can be the fact that we are a law office with a quite long history in Trieste (founded at the beginning of 1900) and componed today by several lawyers with different ages, fields of interest, specializations and therefore we can offer one-to-one attendance as well as team-work assistance in almost every field.
In the end please notice that one of the main uses of our logo will be on headed paper that we print direcly with our laser printers, and therefore the logo must be effective also if printed in grayscale.
You can visit our website www.studiogerin.com to have some more information on us, but please note that we DON'T LIKE it anymore and we are looking for something graphically completely different.

Thank you for your drafts.
Some advise to all designers.
The name "Gerin" can be stressed out but it must not be too loud. Our stregth are both experience of Gerin descent AND cooperation of the whole team of lawyers. Remember that our name is "Studio Legale Gerin": Studio Legale (Law office, the team) comes first, and then comes Gerin (experience). The two elements are equally important.
The law office was not founded in 1900, but eventually the right date can be put. Anyway, don't settle only on the "lawyers since 1900" thing..
Finally we'd like our logo to be original and characterizing.
All the best for your work

We are more or less halfway, and there is some good material to work on.
We apreciate concepts that both focus on the right spirit (remember that we are a law firm) and have some originality.
For example
#4 (and variations) is very adequate, but there isn't anything that strongly says "hey, that's us!"
#9 is surely original, but it's a little too much "sporty" (see comments to that draft for more details)
Please rimember that all elements of our firm name should have the right weight.
All concepts that elaborte the idea of a symbol made of stylized or trasfigurized initial letters are good. Some simple graphics could be good too.
The halberd (coat of arms of the city of Trieste) can be an idea, but it should be much more abstracted and personalized (a lot of people, including another lawyer's office, in Trieste do use it).
We look forward to see all new proposals that any designer (the ones stat already joned and the ones that still didn't) will make.

WOW! Even better material to work on!

At this point there is some need of more explanations.

All ranked drafts have something we like, although none has still completely centered the target.

#18 - This one has the right attitude and fits in a very classical way what we think for a law firm style. Furthermore there is some originality in the writing. BUT see below, as we’d like some more personalization.

#49 - This one goes in the right direction as for graphic elaboration. The shape made from the three capital letters is good. Still the whole logo is in our opinion a little too sporty (remember our stylistic sliders and our contest brief.

#34 and #17 - These are even better on the way of originality. Although both shapes are not made from all three capital letters (S L G), they are both very distinctive. The idea of writing “studiolegale” altogether and without capitals working with different shades is good. They don’t reflect, in our opinion, exactly the “law firm” idea, but maybe it’s only a matter of getting used to it.

#36 - Like #18 this one is very adequate and classical, but less original. Though we appreciate the idea of a sans serif font for “studio legale” and a serif font for “Gerin”; which express the idea of modernity of the firm structure and tradition of the Gerin name.

#4 #7 - Again very adequate and classical, even too much.

#27 - In this one there is an excellent try to work on capitals to create a completely new and abstract shape, but the logo in the whole is, in our opinion, unbalanced.

#21 - In this one we appreciate the try to work on something more than the mere name. See comments to the designer for more details on why this is not better ranked

Finally, you will say: do you want something classical or something “convention breaking”. We appreciate both aspects. On the other hand, what challenge would it be otherwise? ;-)

We look forward to all new proposals

Please don’t send too many variations of the same draft! Some changes around the same main idea are useful, and even welcomed when they try to meet our requests, but a massive amount of slight changes in color shades or font usage is only confusing to us! Thank you

We arte still uncertain among classic deigns (like #91 #80 #18 #36 #81 #4), more elaborate designs (like #65 #34 #17 #69) and most imaginative ones (like #77 #96 #94).
Every single "category" would deserve a separate ranking.
On the other side, some rankings have been changed as some of our preferences shifted in time.
Every possibility is still open, so we encourage all designers to improve, submit new entries (and join the contest, for the ones that still didn't).

OK, we have one last day to go.

There are really GREAT ideas based on capitals elaboration that spread all the way out, from the most classic one to the most innovative and intriguing one.

But capitals are not mandatory. Nobody so far really explored any possibility to use some simple shape or graphics to carachterize our logo. Apart from the halberd (coat of arms of Trieste), which, I remind you, is really very common and quite trite in many, many signs of our town (from our soccer team http://www.triestinacalcio.it, to a local party http://www.listapertrieste.it/, to a hotel http://www.hotelalabarda.it, to an undertaker's http://www.alabarda.it a.s.o.), nothng has been proposed so far.

You can either work on our field of activity (law firm) or on our specificity (tradition and modern structure with plurality of lawyers for a flexible offer) or on our location (don't settle on Trieste, which can evoke parochialism with neighbours). For example you can work on the fact that we are on a border between two countires, that we are geographically quite in the middle of the European Union - but don't use any explicit EU reference, as european law is a very specific field of practice -, that we are in the heart of the Mitteleuropean area a.s.o.)

We look forward to see your new entries!

I was suggested by LG Design (thank you for the advice) to mark as "not interested" all entries that don't match my desires. I felt al little unconfortable to do so, as I thought that the "not interested" marking should be reserved only to those entries that are so far from my goal that nobody should work any further in that direction (no offence to the designers of the few entries I marked so far; I'm talking about personal liking and not about value).

But, to clear a little bit the fiels, I think that LG Design is right. Therefore I will mark as "not interested" all variations that are, in my opinion, off the table (always talking about personal likng).

PLEASE READ ALL DESIGNERS

Thank you very much for all your entries

I decided to extend the contest only becouse one of our colleagues, the one that we cannot omit to consult (the one that is... the Gerin one!!!), is at the moment out of town and is coming back on Friday. I could let the contest end and make a decision together in the next 7 days, but I’d like to give to my colleague the possibility to ask you for minor changes, if needed.

Please don’t get upset if it takes a little longer to have a winner and don’t withdraw your entries in the meanwhile

Thanks

P.S. I will soon rank you new entries
P.P.S. Of course all new entries and joining of new designers will be welcomed

FINAL SPEECH

Thank you very much to all designers.

This contest produced far better results than I ever expected. It was really amazing and surprising to see your work.

I'd like we could confer different prizes as in film festivals or in beauty contests. I'd feel much more confortable if I could prize the most elegant, the most creative, the most balanced, the funniest a.s.o. But of course I can't, and on the other side, pretty few would care about it as this is a contest for money and certainly not for glory (besides given by a perfect stranger).

I only wish to say that, altough only one can win, many would deserve to be prized. Our final choice was made through an internal collective decision (as we are more professionals working in the same office), but it wasn't easy to get to a decision.

Thank you again to all of you, and good luck for your work.
