We didn't want to risk influencing you too much, but let me give a bit more background than the submission form allows:

1. This is a revolutionary application that has never been available previously
2. This dramatically reduces the amount of work and time for hospital finance staff who manually review surgical bill sheets (messy, handwritten, items crossed out and prices changed with no hospital control)
3. This bridges the gap between a hospital finance person and their clinical (nurse, doctor) staff so that they do not have to possess specific medical knowledge about implants used in order to determine if the bill should be paid
4. KERMIT actually stands for the attributes of the application, but we chose the name because it lends a personality to the application and makes the user think of the obvious Kermit (the frog). A simpler, happy time for most.
5. We have done limited trademark research and are confident that we are not infringing by using the name. We can't use the likeness (nor do we wish to), however, this lends itself to MANY creative interpretations using stylized/illustrations of frog-like things (pond, lily pad, cattails, etc.)
6. Kermit stands in juxtaposition to the fast, tense environment of a hospital and is anti-software in an environment where software costs upwards of six figures and requires complex integration. Kermit is cloud-based, affordable, easy, simple and powerful.
7. The acronym is Knowledge, Empower, Report, Manage, Immediate, Transparent

The submissions thus far are good, but I don't want to go too far down a road without seeing some other executions first. Just wanted you to know that you are free to go down other paths...and they don't have to be totally buttoned-up and serious.

Thanks for your hard work thus far!

October 9, 2012: General direction for designers

Thanks, again, to all of our participating artists and designers. Wonderful work!

Just some additional, general direction that should help your valued efforts:

1. We're being told by our legal counsel that it would be better to stay away from literal frog(s) in the designs. Our opinion is that we really like them, but we certainly don't want to draw any unwanted negative attention because we chose to use a name AND a frog image and that, somehow, created confusion in the marketplace (although we don't believe that it will). That said, get creative to help us solve this problem that we have an unforgettable name that connotes positive feeling, but tying it to a frog might not have been useful direction for us to give to you.

2. Whether or not a frog cannot be used (maybe a frog leg, maybe a foot...? who knows?), we certainly can intimate that Kermit has the simplicity and essence of a frog in a pond by using things that surround a frog (pond, lily pad, cattails, water element, drop, etc.). We don't have to be literal and can be symbolic and stylized.

3. The first logos submitted on this contest incorporated a cloud. We ranked them and then the subsequent entries built on that. The cloud, actually, isn't an important part of our offering and many of the submissions now have the cloud as a primary design element. We would like to get away from that direction.

4. If frog is out, one thing that we could do is embody the true evolution this application brings to the area of healthcare spend management. Our approach is the logical evolution to make things more efficient, accurate and streamlined...like a tadpole evolved into a frog (that's a hint that gets us around the frog alone). A possible tagline could be The Evolution of Healthcare Spend Management.

5. Simple illustrations as stylized design elements hinting at some of the ideas in note 2 above would be appreciated to see if this conveys the feel we're looking for.

Thanks - we look forward to continued submissions.
