Here is an idea that people could try if they want. This definitely falls in the "not your traditional logo" category. I'm not even sold on the idea myself, but I thought it may be fun if it worked out.
The idea is as follows: Make a somewhat complex/detailed visual element, that when zoomed out is somewhat simple. So for example, a shield of arms something along the lines of
http://images.google.com/images?q=harvard+sheild - maybe with just a B in it, and the rest just looks textured. But, when zoomed in, you see all of these other visual elements - perhaps wire frames, documents, computer networks, things like that. So for business cards etc, it would essentially just be the B with texture, but for the web, I would make the logo subtly interactive as almost a hidden easter egg - basically I would just import your vectors into flash, and when the user happened to mouse over the logo, I would zoom into some quadrant of the logo. Crazy? Perhaps. But I thought I would throw it out there in case it sparked any of your guys & gals interests.
