The inspiration for this logo was a picture I took while staying at Pebble Beach several years ago. The bag piper shows the heritage of the game yet the other elements give the new modern feel and excitement.

You are very fortunate to have been at Pebble Beach!

I see that you withdrew your other submission (with the mountains). Since I am new to this concept for logo design, I am curious why a designer would withdraw it? In general, I liked it but was just commenting on the topography for our club to consider a minor revision. Can you help a "newbie" out so I understand the withdrawn logos?

The reason I withdrew the entry was the fact that it had mountains in the design. I will be working on a modified version where there may be rolling hills. You may want to post your location in the brief so designers may do some research into the area and create a logo that helps identify your club with the surroundings. Also, once a designer is ranked and has mountains in the design, others may take a clue from the other designers work and the next thing you know you will have mountains all over the board. This will only waste both designers and your time. If you feel a design is just not right, do not hesitate to bin the design (an explanation to the designer is always helpful).

Do not expect 100 entries in the first few days. Most activity will more than likely come in the final 24-48 hours. 10 hours is like an eternity to a designer. Most will get in a grove and start popping out designs in a flurry. I am sort of testing the waters to get a feel of what you like at this point. Keep up the good communication and this site will do wonders. Hope this helps.

I appreciate the explanation for the withdraw (and appreciate that action due the reasoning).

I have updated the brief, as well, so another thanks to you for that idea.

Thank you again for the different design concepts. Of your submissions to my contest, I prefer #6, #7, and the one you withdrew (if trees and/or rolling hills replaced the mountains) to the bagpipes (although that is a nice concept). I also looked through your portfolio and thought that the concept of your submission #80 to Highland Run (combined with our logo) could be used to make a nice update to our existing logo. I also particularly liked the designs for Hampton Company and Blue River.

Finally, to make sure I understand properly, I have two questions:
1. When I post here, am I correct that nobody else can see these posts?
2. Is it appropriate for me to let a designer know which of theirs I prefer over other submissions by the same designer, or should I be posting these comments in the general discussion?

I have uploaded some new concepts. The main thing I am trying to concentrate on is how the logo will be used on embroidery, cocktail napkins, ball marks, etc. Colors can be altered at any time if you would prefer another mix. The designs should also work in one color for the times that is necessary.

This area is for you and the individual designer. The main page comment area is for general directives (such as "no mountains" or "would like to see a golf cart"). Basically your ideas and thoughts. Now, if for instance you comment on a particular entry from a designer, that should be on the individual designer page. Such as the one I withdrew (remove mountains, add trees).

Relax and have fun with this. The hardest part of the process is the limited communication. If you see something that is not right, let the designer know. You cannot hurt our feelings unless you let us work ourselves to death and never comment. Let the creative process evolve and keep doing what you are doing.

Take care-

I certainly appreciate your thoughtfulness of our embroidery, napkins, etc. requirements.

I do like the design of #11 with trees, but I think that we may lose a lot of the effect with some of the non-print marketing and smaller items.

One thing we have wrestled with is whether to go to a completely new logo, or try to do an updated version of our existing logo. What are your thoughts to taking your design #16/17 and putting it on a tee (as our existing logo is), with the tee going through the Sugar | Valley? Also, we have been considering changing the name to Sugar Valley Golf Club (instead of Country Club). This would help the spacing of the tee through it. You don't need to go through the effort of designing it this way if you don't feel it would look good.

I have looked at your current logo and have a few sketches on an update. I need to sleep on a few ideas and I will get back to this project later on Thursday. Thanks for the kind words.

Great! I look forward to them. I will be taking the initial submissions to the ownership group on Thursday to get their feedback and discuss them. I will rank them once we have met, then since I will understand which direction they are leaning, will be able to update the rankings more often.

I just ranked everyone and was unsure how to do it. Am I first to rank original designs, then rank the variations, or if there are two variations of my favorite, rank them 1-3, then rank the next set of variations 4-7, etc.?

For example, do I rank you #16/17 next to each other (and if so, do I treat #28 as a variation or a new design)? The bottom line is they loved your designs, but after I did my ranking, it seemed like I probably didn't do it correctly. I need to go and edit the rankings, but wanted to understand better what I was supposed to do before I did so.

Thank you again for all of your efforts in this.

I'm not sure there is a right or wrong way to rank. I believe you should rank the designs in order of preference. At the conclusion of the contest you are required to rank three different designers in the top three spots. We receive points and this keeps one designer from racking up on the top three positions which have the highest point value. Positions 4-10 can be any designer in any order because they carry the same point value. So you could rank one designer (bad form) in all of the positions 4-10 if you like or spread the points around to other designers that worked real hard on your contest. This is totally up to you and your committee.

At this stage of the game, your ranking helps identify your likes and dislikes. The bad news is that some designers will try and get a close to the first ranked design and this ruffles feathers and also stifles creativity in my opinion. I hope this helps. You are doing a great job with the contest.

Now- More importantly. What can I do to my designs that will give your club the logo they would like to have? I will look for updates later tonight.

Can you give me more information on the "Shield" logo. Are you wanting to see something along the lines of my #26. Maybe a simplified version?

Client
Thank you for your explanation of the process, as well as the update to the "Golf Club". I will be replacing your previous one with that on my ranking.

I appreciate you taking a stab at the shield. Perhaps the following will help you:
1. I prefer fonts like #15, 17, 18, although I am open to new fonts
2. Instead of the hole flag, I prefer images such as your #11, 17, 28 or others' #15, 20, 22, although again I am open to any new image

In my mind, the traditional "shield" conveys a stuffy, snobby feeling. I would like to see an updates/modern take, whatever that may mean to you, on it. If I can answer any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for the shields. I'm sure the owners will LOVE them, but I am still concerned due to embroidery concerns.

It is also important to know that you cannot embroider a halftone or gradient fill.

Client
Thank you. Your design #11 is still one of their favorites, but I have it ranked lower than they would because of my concerns. I still think your design #37 is the classiest one yet and would be the most versatile, so that is the one I'm pushing for. I'll be meeting with them again Saturday afternoon to try to get them to begin narrowing it down. They are still wrestling with something along these lines:classy (#37, #28), shield (#68), updated logo (#56, #54), or a contemporary design (#60, #63).

Now back to a general question. As a designer, if I know a design isn't going to be used by us, however I think it is quality artwork, would you prefer I simply rank it lower, or should I put in the not interested bin?

Logo Designer
I would bin the designs to keep the contest moving in a positive direction. The goal is a logo for the club that will work across the different media formats. I would rather know if i am on the right track than an awesome designer. #11...not my favorite. Just my 2 cents.

What do you mean by "bin the designs"?

I think they like #11 b/c it is unique. I have tried to explain that designs like that probably won't transfer over well to embroidery. We'll see if I can get through to them tomorrow.

I think your #37 & #28 are the right direction for us. To me, they are classy, clean, and #28 even incorporates the old logo concept. I'll provide more feedback tomorrow afternoon, but will have access to my computer in the event you submit anything else prior to my meeting.

By "bin" I mean "Not Interested". Sorry.

For embroidery to be effective the text needs to be 5mm (about 1/4") in height to be legible and not fill in during stitching. Also another important factor when embroidering caps is the overall height. 2.25" - 2.5" should be the maximum and personally I do not like to exceed about 4" in width for most all caps. Visors about 1 1/2" in overall height.

Actually #11 would work for embroidery except for the "country club" portion. I would want to update the ball and work on the dimple pattern of the ball if this is indeed the direction they would like to go.

I will work on those later tonight. Family time this afternoon. Take care.

Thank you very much for the input and the revisions. I understand that family needs to be a priority (I have a 12 & 13 year old). After meeting with the owners, you can see the new raking. What are your thoughts on the fact that the ball has nothing from 10-4 on a clock? I really like that feature, but was concerned about the logo work (shirts, jackets, etc.).

Logo Designer
There are a couple of different ways to approach the darker shirts. Depending on the color of apparel that is being embroidered you may need to change the colors of the thread. Here I am showing a black background and using white and green thread. Important note...If I am chosen as winner please request an embroidery file. I will explain this at a later date if necessary.

The three options above are the same file with a color change. This can easily be manipulated with the vector file that will be provided, which is important since the items that you will use will vary in color. Many companies establish a color standard that will be used on different color backgrounds. The important factor is that the logo remains unchanged across different media types. I have a way of sending a separate file of the logo that your source for embroidery can easily dedicate a thread color for each element. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you very much for mocking these up so I could see them. I think I like the original version better than the ones with the filled in or complete circle. Certainly, they help define the ball as I requested, but I think they detract from design.

Thank you for playing with the different font of the initials for #144, however we love the elegant script (without being too feminine) of your original designs. I would like to see the bottom of "S" stop similar to the top of the "S" and "V" instead of wrapping around. Not sure I'll like it better, but would be a nice comparison.
