#41 is slightly better, but still a bit too generic. And because it's generic I'd be concerned that people wouldn't recognise it as a logo, and would think that it was a search tool and try to click on it to search.
#42 is better again. It still doesn't have the quality I'm looking for. I'm not quite sure what's lacking but I think slightly less simplicity is what is needed. Perhaps more sophisticated icons, perhaps a more distinctive font (though I definitely want sans-serif), perhaps some gradient, perhaps a 3-D effect. Of course, don't do ALL of this - it will look awful - but one or two of these would help, I think.
