Thank you Medi. It was tough to choose between #2-3 because I like them both. Thank you for reading my initial design suggestions. #2 has a good outdoor feel but maybe too much of a feeling of darkness, especially with the tent being empty. Would it work as a mountain? I like the cross in the P and i like the curve to the bottom line. #3 I like the lighter feel and I like that you can read the bottom line easier. The font looks a bit childish vs being adventurous. Nice idea putting the cross in the tent.
Ok Medi, I am going to be blunt because I really like your work so I want to help steer you more in the direction I would like to be going. The look you are achieving is cutesy childish summer camp. That is not the image I want to portray. Are you familiar with the situation in South Africa – the legacy of apartheid? Townships were created during the apartheid years - mile after mile of tin shacks where poverty, AIDS, rape are entrenched factors of daily existence. Townships are 100% black. Children rarely get out of the township and they grow up believing this is the only life they will ever know. Add into the mix a generation of white children who never meet black children so they grow up believing the hateful stereotypes passed on by their parents and you have a cycle of poverty and division that never ends. These are the children I am bringing out to the African country-side. Bring the races together at a crucial age, 10-12. PLAY will attempt to shake up these children’s lives – show them a whole new world, build them up and inspire them to go back to their community and take on social change. There is no cost to come to the camp, it will be an honor to be nominated by a child’s school to attend. So when designing, don’t think silly fun camp for kids – think strong warrior. Not military boot camp, not hillbilly cabins – think African adventure. I hate to say it, but more of a Survivor feel. The children will be mastering challenges like rock climbing, rope courses, team competitions designed to overcome their biases and self concept. The camp is in the African bush, surrounded by baboons, zebra, impala, etc. This region also has mountains, rivers, waterfalls, canyons for the children to explore. Does this help refine my vision for you? Or was that TMI - too much information?!
Hello again Lisapoll, Thank you, this information is very important, now i get the feel about what you do. i will make new ones base on this information, i also think this information should be on the brief or public comment for all designer to compete in your contest.
More specific feedback for new designs: I think if we can take the best aspects of what you have done so far that we will be closer to what I would like. #2 has the best overall look because it is not childish. I like the curved line on the bottom but make it easier to read. I like the tent and sky of #4 but can you lighten/brighten up the green? I like the lighter brown of the PLAY in #4 but I don't like the plank font - looks childish and hillbilly. Also not African - they don't build with wood like that. Not planks or logs, more like thick sticks. That might work, not sure. I think the PLAY font has to be strong/purposeful but not too dark. May seem trivial but has to look good on chocolate brown or tan Tshirts. Can't be playing in the mud in white tshirts! Am i making this too complicated?
Thanks Medi, that is good to know. I have taken your advice and posted that in the public comment section. I don't want to waste people's time so if that helps focus people, then great! What we could write when doing the brief in the first place was so limiting that I didn't know I could go into such detail...
Hello again Lisapoll i still have another ones in my mind but here what fastest i can do for you now: #14 #15 will be back with new concept in about 1 hour
Thanks - the new ones look great! way to combine the best of the previous. I look forward to your new concept. I hope that you also might have time to do something with the logo idea that I attached in the document section of my brief. Nobody has attempted it and i'd really like to see how that would look when done by someone with talent, like you.
You are awesome! #17, #19, #14, #23 are all so close to being perfect. With some tweaking, i would be happy having any one of them as my logo. Love them! I don't know what time it is in Indonesia to know if you are still working on this. There is only @ 6 hours left in the open phase of my contest, but I know that you are definitely one of my top 5 designers so we will have 2 more days to tweak it after that happens. Can we wait until then? If there is some strategic reason on your part why you need the feedback now, i can go ahead and take the time to do it. But i am crunched right now getting ready for my last day out at the orphan center (my job for the last 2 years before going out on my own to start PLAY). let me know, thanks, Lisa
thank you for your patience and understanding. That was a tough day, saying good bye to the kids. But i am back, and ready to get to work. There are really only 3 designers in the running now. None of them are perfect as is but we are close! For yours, #17 and #23 are similar and there are parts of each that i like better. So i am wondering if we can combine the best to get one great design. I like having the PLAY on top, but then we lose the long curved line on the bottom. You also then don't notice the rushing water anymore. Can you have the PLAY on top like #23 but then have the bottom look like #17, so I guess it needs to be wider to keep that look. I love the two kids, but my sister thinks the fists look angry and thinks open hands would look better. I get that fists raised is victory, celebration. But can we see what it looks like with open hands just in case it comes across to others as angry too? We can see which looks better, open or closed. Lastly, i think having a 2 color logo will be good for the camper's tshirts (price goes up astronomically for each color you add to the screen printing) but can we add color to the logo so that i have something more colorful for business cards and web page? I love the African sunset you added to #14, is there anyway we can incorporate that into this design? I think it might look good behind #17, but will be more difficult to incorporate if the PLAY is on top. Any ideas to get a orangish red into the mix here? I will write my comments for your other 2 designs in new box. thank you Medi!
#14 - I still really love this. The overall look - the font you chose, the curved line on bottom, the african sunset, the tent opening to cross. It's all good. I'm just wondering if there is a way to add in adventure. Because otherwise the tent with a cross could just be like a church revival tent, not a camping tent. I love the rock climber that you used in #19. Would it work to put something like that in dark brown inside the light brown of the P,L, or Y - they seem wide enough to be able to do that. Or whatever other idea you might have to add an action figure to this design. Thanks!
And now for #19. Thank you for using my idea. it's not as good as the two designs that you came up with, but I am still drawn to it. I think I have to see if i can improve it, or i won't be able to let go of it. How would it look for the Y to have the bottom leg slanting the other way, you know like a lower case "y". I like the font you have chosen, it is better than the circular thing that the other guy used who used my layout idea. Also, your rock climber is the best of all the rock climbers in all the other designs. Like i mentioned in my other comment, this will be good for Tshirts but can we add some color so i have a colorful web and business card? Any way to work the yellowish, orangish, red in? Either by using it instead of the light brown in the PLAY, or by putting a perfect circle of an African sun behind the whole thing. If you try the sun idea, the sun could either be smaller (so the lettering extends outside the sun) or if you make the sun larger so the lettering is completely enclosed in the sun, you will have some extra space in the lower left corner to add an image, like the silhouette of an acacia tree. It's very cliche for African web pages, but i don't care. It's one of my favorite images - acacia tree in front of sunset. Let me know what you think...
I know, i'm sorry! I lost 8 hours of valuable work time when i was away from the computer. Just do what you can, i was only trying to help you win because i love your work and i appreciate all the time you have put in so far.
update for 17+23 :#50 #51 these two are options to incorporate the sunset into the design, we can work to the fist ( open or close) and other details for next revisions, but i want to know your opinion about these two. #52 update for 14
#51 is great! good combo of 17 and 23 and overall great look of outdoor adventure and bringing the kids together. It is close to being perfect. Just minor tweaks - trying hands open but also, can you add white behind the darker boys arm, you lose it in the dark colors of the bush and L outline. The other boys arm blends in a bit too. The bottom font line - can it be a bit bigger and a bit darker, like you have it in #23? And how would it look in the darkest color of the sunset above, to tie in the colors top and bottom (but still slightly larger, like #17). Still one solid color or it's too hard to read. #52 - I get what you were trying to do, add a compass for adventure. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like a compass, it looks like a crown of thorns which reinforces the idea that the logo is for a tent revival and not an adventure camp. Thanks for continuing to work on these Medi!
Yes! #54, 55 are so much better! kids show up better and font on bottom is better bigger and darker. I think i will get opinions as to whether open hand or closed hand is better. For the orange font on bottom, can you make it just a bit deeper sunset orange, it's a bit too bright against the dark brown. Then i think it will be perfect and a tough choice between 54 and 55. Right now #55 is really my second rank but i want to keep the similar designs together so it will be easier for others who are ranking to compare the two - see the differences between similar designs. I wouldn't spend any more time on #14, unless you already have it done, because you have already incorporated the best of 14 into 55 so i like 55 a lot better. But if you still have time, i'd still like to see what you can do with #19 based on my comments above. Thank you Medi, Lisa
Medi, i'm glad you're back! #54 will be perfect with a darker/deeper orange. As for #19, that will be great if you still do something with it. I just wanted to let you know that the guy who is working on a similar layout added the african sunset colors behind his and added the animal silhouette on his own - I didn't give him those ideas. But i still think the african sunset and the tree silhouette are fair game under the contest guidelines since you already had a sunset in one of your other designs and i asked you to add it to #19 also and the acacia tree is different. Plus both are obvious concepts for Africa. Not that you have to do that, it was just a suggestion on my part because i like the image. But you may have ideas of your own ;)
how about this one: #72 darker sunset on top and the same color on the botom (in gradient), also i want to inform you, there are 3 steps of brown in my design in this set, not two. i think that will be something to think about for your screen printing t-shirt?
Thank you, that is good to know, it looked like 2 colors to me. Looks good, I like the darker sunset on top. But can you not do a gradient on the bottom? just a solid color - the darkest orange red in the sunset (not red). The gradient just makes it too busy next to the busy picture on top, and makes it less bold. I don't want it to look washed out and it shouldn't be a bright color, but a deep color.
Thanks for giving me the cheaper option too! hmmm, tough to choose. The gradient is growing on me. i like all 3, guess i'll just have to get some outside feedback, include all 3 in the voting. Thank you!
Dammit Medi, you have just made this contest impossible for me to choose! I love ALL the designs you just submitted. #76 is perfect as is, made it my first choice! #79 - can i see it with the kids moved over underneath the "for youth" and then can i see it without the kids and make the "FOR" in the dark brown also. #77 - great idea putting the stamp design around it. Can I see it with the urpose, eadership, etc in the dark brown font also instead of the light brown. I hope you get this before the time runs out! thank you, Lisa
Thank you! Sorry, they do say minutes and there's still 47 minutes left. Guess my clock was wrong. Sorry to rush you! But I don't see how you could have done a better job, they are perfect!. I just have a question, what is the difference between #84 and 82?
Hello again Lisa, I will be offline for next couple hours, go out with my kid and wife:) will be back around 10pm Jakarta time. Just leave me message if there are still something you want me to do about these entries, i will do that while i am back online
I absolutely cannot think of anything to make these designs better. You are good. When this phase ends, I will send out for Friend Feedback because I really can't choose - there are too many amazing choices. Thank you for all your work Medi
Hello Medi, Did you miss me?! ha ha. It's just that i bugged you so much for 6 straight days then 4 days of silence. As i said i am having a hard time choosing so the friend votes are really helping. It looks like it is going to come down to #82 and 83 - both yours of course. The rules say that the #1 ranked designer can continue to submit designs. So what i am wondering is if i can see what #82 looks like in just 2 colors, the dark brown with the lower sunset color as a solid color background? And the same for #83 but leave the lighter child white(clear) so that when i print on a tan Tshirt it will show up as the right color. Does that make sense? I would keep the multicolor logo for web, business card, brochures, etc. I would just like to see which one of these designs looks better in 2 colors for Tshirt purposes before i decide. Also, if you have time, can you tweak the tree just a little bit. If you type "acacia tree africa" into a google image search, you'll see that the tree is a bit wider, a bit flatter, less symmetrical. It looks like it is reaching out to the sunset. Think you can try that so the tree on the logo doesnt just look like a regular tree? Don't change the size of anything else, just widen and flatten the tree silhouette. you still have some space to extend below the words. Thank you Medi! Lisa
Now you're back, your silence is killing me, haha. Lisa, i made changes for the tree, but i am afraid i cannot answer your 2 colors request, i try to made it up, please check the result...and..it still in 3 solid colors : Dark brown - darken orange - lighter orange. when i try the gradient with 1 color : darken orange to white...the essence of the sunset color is gone. Let me know what you think.
Thank you! I think the tree is better, definitely more acacia-like. As for screening Tshirts, how many colors are in the the full color logo like #86? I guess 3 colors is cheaper than whatever that number is, and it still looks good like this, for Tshirt purposes. But I was thinking of even simpler than that. Like what you have in #89 but without the yellow part of the background. Just one solid color without gradient behind all the words and images - preferably the deeper red orange at the bottom of the sunset in #86. Then the whole circle of the logo becomes the sun. Africa is known for its beautiful sunsets because the sun is a huge reddish orange glowing orb in the sky. So for this 2 color logo, you are not trying to capture the gradient of the sky at sunset, just showing the orb of the sun at sunset. I was just curious how this would look so i feel comfortable choosing #86 or 87 as final logo knowing Tshirts would still look good. The 3 color looks good, but i am still wondering if we can pull off 2! We nonprofits have to cut corners where we can - printing out 60 new tshirts every time we have a camp will be very expensive, especially when the kids don't pay to attend. And for some of these kids, getting a brand new Tshirt, never been worn, no stains or holes, is a HUGE thing!
Full color logo #86 should be in 3 colors, 1 solid dark brown and the 2s is gradient from red orange to yellow. i will keep trying the 2 colors as your suggested, solid red orange without the yellow, will be back to you with updates in very soon:)
See, I knew you could do it! I think it looks good in just 2 colors. That will be a big help financially when it comes to printing. Thank you so much for taking the time to do that. Ok, I'm going to get a few opinions now for the final decision. It will be one of yours, it's just a matter of which one....
