Hi Lawrie

You asked which design you should work with.
I think the first one was a good idea. However I am feeling that a little more finesse could be worth exploring.
I am not sure the best way to go about this.....
The finer font style of design 15 is more appealing than any of the others and definitely kerning should be as close to normal as possible unless there is a design or practical reason to change that. Like spreading it out to reach a predetermined width set by other elements in the design.I don't know where I can lead you other than this.

Am just trying to keep balance/relation between the type and the symbol …as opposed to just plonking it there. :-)

Have uploaded a few more variations (including #15 with less kerning - just in case!)
