What We Do
Our theme is African American 70's retro style speakeasy.. Superfly, Shaft, & Foxy Brown might drink here... So, similar to how Bennigans was Irish, but open to everyone, so to is our space, but add artists and subtract bankruptcy(lol).

Color Preferences
orange, yellow, brown or green - do not feel inhibited by color if your creative vision leads you somewhere else we can hone in later.
Our Ideas & Additional Information
urban sense of style.. and hip-ness is important to me. I like www.frankwhitenyc.com logo for its style, but not to replicate the design. We thought of the Soul Train logo as a reminiscent throwback also. We also thought of incorporating the sun into the logo. Just ideas we had before seeking your professional help :-)!

Few Thoughts

Okay....I like#13 because of the 70's -esque African American Soul Music scene theme it brings to mind.

I like the sense that Lady Sings the blues brings to mind..stylistically.
http://4.music.bigpond-images.com/images/AlbumCoverArt/189/XXL/Lady-Sings-The-Blues.jpg
although it is too serious and ornate for my taste.

I also wonder if a G-Clef can be worked into as the E or the S.

Our theme is AfricanAmerican interpretation of a diverse culture. So, similar to how Bennigans was Irish, but open to everyone, so to is our space, but add artists and subtract bankruptcy(lol).

So, hit me with some 70's retro style.. Solid Gold, Dance Fever, Superfly, Shaft, Foxy Brown...but don't overdo it!

Have fun...
Thanks...

What I like about all of your entries is the clean styles ....Mare ..nice movement and design but I need more color pop and vividness more soul than blues, but still clean

The thing I like about Jercts is the mood. very funky. and soulful

The thing about PMDs I like is the simplicity.easy to remember. possibly iconic.

One hour left and you ALL have made this very difficult..Thank you SO much for your efforts. Any surprise last minute challengers welcome!!

Mare, please take a look at the layout of the whole logo - The rectangular bounding box, "Elena's" smaller and left justified, the "Elena's" font of #164 , the perfectly circular O and curved L of "SOUL", "Showcase Lounge & Cafe" within the bounding box, etc. This was all "borrowed" from my original 30 submissions (starting at #42 ). I've been working with the CH since #2 and now all of the last-minuters are pouring in, scalping my ideas.

dude - you can't claim a bounding box as an original design element. Nor can you claim a font that defines an era (bauhaus). If you want to accuse ANYONE of "borrowing" left-justification, you should probably just be angry at Adobe for making it the default.

Printmarket sorry i didnt expres my self corectly i thought more on style of the design specialy the letters made of 3 lines wich cary most of the design in my opinion.

PrintMarket, while I do think your design is great for the seventies vibe it gives, you really cant lay claim to a type treatment thats almost the same as the soul train logo

I agree with Print Market Direct. I posted a very similar concept to Print Markets almost minutes after his went up and I removed it IMMEDIATELY... The idea of the bounding box with the three lines is original to him as until the idea went up NO ONE else had used it... Now since the CH likes it; everyone is doing it.

I just wish I had put mine in a few minutes before you Print Market.... But as I said, I think the designers here should respect the fact that the design idea was up from Print Market first and therefore the other designs should be removed out of courtesy...

Sorry.... My fault.. I meant entry #109 which now everyone is poaching from........

Print Market... Your design was original but the three line concept is original to jecrt... (wish I would have beat you on this one jecrt :D )

I think we should move this issue to PM and let admin decide if necessary.

Love Peace and Hair Grease everyone.

I hear the discussion put forth, and I think the contention is not worth the effort... Artists borrow elements all the time, but in this particular case where two concepts seem similar, jecrt's came off better than PMD's which shows in the ranking.

PMD has been great at working on his concept with me, and I appreciate that. Actually his earlier concept is still more highly ranked than the controversial one.

I am looking for a logo that is mentally visible. When Elena's Soul is mentioned, I want the Logo to be imaginable and relevant. PMD's #75 does that. Jerct's is more difficult to do that with, although the styling and color is more appealing to my eye, and carries the feel of the era.

I am still looking for entries, that are unique and can accomplish that mission. Memorable, Unique, Urban, Clever, Sophisticated. I cannot say I have found 'THE ONE' yet, but what I have at the top is solid work.

I will definitely put heavier weight on earlier submissions and those who have allowed me to refine my ideas on concept. That being said, I welcome more, innovative entries.

Best Regards!
Algernong

PS Lets get submissions in Sooner than later. your last minute entries may be great, but I need time to deliberate to make a solid judgement.

Thank you to all the designers who submitted entries. I wish I had more time to work with all of you talented folks to create a perfect concept.

The reason for my selection. I selected Print Markets design because of its simplicity and style. It is reminiscent of Soul train, which admittedly was a concern of mine, but the logo will transfer to various media with relative ease.

I can put it in a B/W newspaper, neon sign, letterhead, and flyer and it will translate well. It is identifiable in small scale as well as large, with a font that suggest modern sophistication.

I really liked JECRT's entry and felt it did carry the feel of my place the best, but its complexity may not translate well in different media and sizes. I really wrestled between #1 and #2 and it is time which forced my hand on the final decision.

Of the rest, there were some good concepts that came in late, but would have required more time to develop.

In any event, many of you have real talent and best of luck in the future.
