We are named after the Edith Checkerspot Butterfly found in the Sierra Nevada mountains. As a design-centric materials science innovation company that cares deeply about sustainability, the butterfly is very symbolic. First, nature (evolution) provides many cues about how to design for optimal form and function of materials (think: spider silk, shark skin or a butterfly's wings as examples). Second, checkerspot butterflies inhabit the mountains and are particularly sensitive to variation in weather and climate. Third, the circuitous path of a butterfly in flight is analogous to the iterative design process (it's rarely, if ever, linear).
