I've designed a modern icon of a checkerspot butterfly, not very literal, because I wanted to give a fresh and high-tech style to your logo. In #10 draft I've inspired by the circuitous path of a butterfly in flight, as you mentioned in your brief, so I made an abstract letter "e" to look like this.
