Hi Tim, I understand this design might be more playful than your criteria suggests you are looking for...but, I thought I would offer it for consideration anyway.
RISK is GOOD! And in your case, OUTSTANDING!! What else would you like to do?
I love the pencil as a cartoon. Build on it. Define at least a student (you have done this with Pencil) as well as a tutor (try a Pen). I use Pilot G-2 07 exclusively and you could make the clip serve as a tie to distinguish. Would love to see a parent as a yoga/pilates mat (getting some downtime) or gym bag. For gym bag or pilates try to go with NYSC -New York Sports Club- style font.
I know that the logo shouldn't be too busy with graphics, but I think you are onto something and I love your art. If scaled properly, two or three characters could make it onto this logo, right?
Font is awesome: would like to see some burgandy in there with the green, but yellow could have its place.
So far this is outstanding and strongly encourage you to continue to compete as I could see using this for t-shirt or other marketing, and possibly a logo.My only hesitation is that the image doesncreate the relationship(s).
INCREASE size of tag line and/or add your own: with creative license or verbatim, go for "For Every QUESTION, There Is a SOLUTION." at the smaller font size. However, the EMPHASIS is on REASONABLE RATES and EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE.
