What We Do
The Breakthrough Game is a 14 week process that actually shows people how to produce results in any area of their business or personal life beyond anything they have been capable of producing so far. The group meets virtually using videoconference technology on a weekly basis for 14 weeks.

Color Preferences
Our website is the first of a group of websites that will all have black and white as a base theme and grey/light blue font (as per apple.com). The logo has to be 'clean', with very few colors. Given it's probably going to have a nautical theme, use of blue may be necessary. But in that case, it really must fit with the blue already used on the website (see headings). www.breakthroughgame.com. The corporate site that will eventually focus solely on the corporate version of this program will be black and white with a gold theme. Since this is a leadership development program, it needs to look up-market. It's about being at the top of your game, but in a classy, powerful way, (think world leader, not sportster). It's a no-nonsense approach to producing spectacular, real-world results. We may well have to split out the logos and create different versions when all the sites are up but for now, we need the interim logo to fit both markets.
Our Ideas & Additional Information
We had a first logo created but aren't happy with it. Please see website: www.breakthroughgame.com. It is too 'soft'. The style is more suited to a cafe logo than a hard-edged leadership development program. It's too soft in terms of strokes and also in terms of colors. The colors need to be more dynamic, clean and appealing to mainstream people who may or may not be in the business community. Here are our comments:

1. We really like The Breakthrough Game words stacked the way they are, because 'Breakthrough' literally breaks out - away from the other shorter words in a kind of 'out of the box' kind of way. Will consider other formats but wanted you to know the thinking behind this.
2. Will consider 'out of the box' visual but really were hoping to use a nautical theme because so many of the metaphors that the coaches use are nautical.
3. The idea we had re: what we want the logo to represent was essentially a nautical version of the existing one. i.e. instead of a winding road, we wanted the logo to highlight a little sailboat, very simply drawn (brushstrokes?). The visual needs to convey the following as it sums up the entire Breakthrough Game process:
1. The 'player' (participant) is the boat.
2. The boat is heading off into the distance, to a far away land/port that's very exciting and thrilling.
3. It's being guided by the North Star (Polaris).
4. The wind is billowing out the sails (this is important)
5. The sea is choppy
6. Important: the boat has to jibe and tack (zig-zag) its way to the destination in the distance, using skill to make the best use of the available wind, and to navigate the (potentially stormy) seas and the obstacles (islands?) therein.
7. We know this is a LOT of info to communicate! We were thinking a brushstroke-y image rather than a literal picture was what we were after: it's crucial that the image look clean, professional. It says 'we mean business', 'we're not kidding' and 'we get results'. It CAN'T look kitschy, new-age'y or busy. Simple is good!

Hey! Thanks for getting the ball rolling! I really like what you've done for a number of reasons. First, it's clean. Really nice. I think I would jump at something like this for my Executive web site that will be created next year. The main challenge is that it's on a black background: if you pop up my website on a separate page, you'll see that the black box of the logo fights with design of my website. There is a black band going across the middle of the page, and the logo fights with it for attention. It needs to complement, rather than fight with what's already there.

I have to say, even though you haven't incorporated any of the pictoral theme I really wanted, I'm really impressed with what you've done: incredibly creative. If I could use this, the only thing I would have asked for was to turn the grey to white. I love the reflection - looks like water, which I guess is nautical! Really impressive piece of work.

Hi bluberri. (#2) Thx for your entries! Really amazed that you managed to get all of that pictoral detail into something that really communicates. You've managed to incorporate all the elements, which is astounding! Very clever, using the porthole as a frame ... Overall, I like the idea but need the logo to look a lot 'cleaner', hence you didn't make first spot. That's why version 2 didn't make it into my picks ... wasn't sure what all the bits were - flying stuff?! Also, the words in the logo look chaotic. I'm trying to communicate that I can show clients a route through the chaos - the Game is the solution to that. Fantastic first shot, though. Impressive.

Hi Dario (#3)
I really like how clean your logo looks. Like the colors you chose. Really together. The only challenge is that the pictoral, to me, doesn't reflect 'breakthrough'. (I had the same reaction to generalmicro's entry, but forgot to mention that, so sorry for not being clear.) Your pictoral communicates 'going into the center' or something like that, as opposed to going THROUGH a limit to the next level.

Generalmicro's, taking a closer look, actually intellectually represents the breakthrough process - you have to go into the center, the heart of the matter, to bust the issues that are blocking you, in order to find a way out - but in the flash of an eye, the circular energy doesn't communicate 'break through', 'find a way through'.

Hope this helps. Am really thrilled at the quality of the work that's being submitted. Awesome.

#1 - even the the colors don't mesh with my website, this stormed into the lead in terms of sheer cleanness: managing to capture some key elements of the pictoral concept I had in mind, with very few strokes. If the colors were more per logo #2 (whose colors and font look near-perfect to me) it would fit better with my site. Also #2 has used a font that is more classy and business-like. #1, again, the concept has stormed into the lead but overall, the energy right now conveys 'Game' (fun, bouncy, light) more than 'Breakthrough' which is 'serious, difficult, direct, heavy. I think if the colors changed to reflect, say, #2's scheme, that would help a bit. Very senior corporate people are going to be looking at this logo, as well as Joe Public.

I'm also left wondering if the boat motif couldn't be integrated on the RHS rather than the left, just as one option. that way, the word 'through' could be used as part of the motif. Eg the word itself could be between the boat and the star?! In the original logo I had asked the designer to have the road bend around the word 'through' to suggest a winding path, but that never really got delivered. Probably impossible given that now the 'path' is not so obvious, since a sailboat doesn't produce a wake, so to speak ...

I put Viar's logo right in at #2 to acknowledge a couple of things:

1. It's super clean! The color looks a little light and needs to have more impact because The Game is high impact. It takes hard work but produces spectacular results. It's about producing real results in the real world, not conceptual 'aha's'.

2. I love the fact that the image is expansive rather than contracting. and that it's about getting out of a maze, breaking free. For some reason the ball lessens the impact, although I get the idea. But I think because it's already called a 'game' we have to be careful about creating a 'playful' impact instead of a serious one.

That said, The Breakthrough Game is the name of the brand, so it's important NOT to separate words into 2 - eg Break and Through. Also, although I LOVE the font and colors of #3, I'm curious to see how it would look if the word Breakthrough were emphasized (darker) rather than the words 'the' and 'game'). Again, it's about not communicating subconsciously that the Game is 'lightweight'.

Just wanted to say that I was given a non-nautical idea by a client (which is actually a bit cliched in the world of leadership development). It's not so much about a door opening into the light, as much as a door half in the light and half out of the light. I think that's the client's experience when play the Game - lighbulbs go on - but from a cold standpoint, people don't know what that really means, so just saying 'things get brighter' isn't what I want to communicate. However, want to feed you some non-nautical ideas too! It's not as simple as 'you'll get great ideas'. What happens is that they learn some real tools and combine them to go over, under, round, through obstacles that are standing between them and what they really want. It's about them building awareness (light) AND building skills. But it's also about Grace - the mysterious wind that blows in your favor - or not - and magnifies things going well or not going at all.

OK - back to the nautical! If you're interested, there are a few shots on www.istockphoto.com of the front of a sailboat, heading towards the horizon. Might provide some ideas. What I'm really looking for is some kind of minimal stroke representation, rather than a 'picture' of a boat, the sea, islands, etc:

In addition, I'm just posting a couple of shots on www.istockphoto.com that I really love in terms of the energy they convey. Partly because the Game is about heading for a goal that lies beyond reach, and how you get there is a mystery at the beginning - precisely because it's 'other side of possible' ...

Here are the ID numbers for the photos:

The reason I prefer #3 over #8 is that the name is already so long, to have a visual that's separate means I'd have to make the whole logo very small so as not to dominate the space. That would mean shrinking the name. I want the name to be legible, since the name is really the brand, not the picture. The picture really enhances. The focus should be the name. I think I haven't been clear about that in my communication. Sorry!

Whoops - realize I should have been referring to entry numbers and I was referring to rating numbers .. duh! Sorry. So, Entry #11 I LOVE that you already took a stab at that. It's a winner as a concept. I just need it to look sharper, less 'rounded' overall - picture, font. And the colors sharper and more 'corporate', as per Entry #4, whose fonts and colors I love. Thx! You're a lot more daring than most of your peers and that works for me. Will definitely be recommending you to others as you're able to move with strange concepts at high speed and confident enough to plop out a prototype for me to throw stones at! It's a big gift to your peers. Great leadership;-)

Caitlin,

FYI,
you may communicate to each designer on their own entry page. Easily click on his/her logo then you will have page between you and its designer.

Use this page only for general brief or discusion, any spesific direction or comments for one design use their entry page.

This is what normally how we works here on LT
Thank you,

There are a lot of posts, so I'd just like to clarify what's really important:

1. Logo has to be on white background in order not to clash with my website, which already has a big black band going through the middle of it. The logo will replace the one, in the same position, that is currently there: www.breakthroughgame.
2. Please don't break up the word 'Breakthrough' into two separate words. It's one word
3. If you want to emphasize a word, 'Breakthrough' is the word to emphasize, not 'Game'
4. I really need something that's CLEAN! It has to be appropriate for Fortune 500 corporate execs to take seriously, i.e. can't be cartoon-y.
5. With that in mind, any pictoral needs to be simple brush strokes/lines rather than rounded cartoon-style pictures of boats, waves etc. Less is more!
6. The brand is the name The Breakthrough Game and must be easily read. That means the pictoral needs to not be so big and/or complicated that I have to shrink the logo down so that it fits into the available space. If I have to shrink it, the name will be hard to read. So the picture is augmenting the name, but still very, very important.
7. Feel free to ask me as many questions as you like. I'm happy to answer.

Thanks!
Kind regards

Caitlin

One more idea, which I realize I didn't share:

The Breakthrough Game is all about creating quantum leaps. A quantum leap is very specific. If you go to this particular page on my website, you will see a description:

http://breakthroughgame.com/about_the_game.html

The visual on that page (a fish jumping to a bigger bowl) doesn't really explain what happens. Basically, at a certain level of awareness, we are orbiting on a particular, familiar track. Once we experience an injection of energy (insight plus effort plus skill), we have the capability of jumping to a much higher, permanent orbit. In quantum physics, an electron does this, but the 'journey' from the lower orbit to the higher orbit is not visible. It literally disappears off of the lower orbit and reappears simultaneously on the higher orbit. I think in quantum physics, the actual path it takes is zig-zaggy, which is interesting because (even though this pictoral would not be nautical) sailboats zig-zag in order to reach their destination. So if you're interested in submitting a non-nautical logo, this is another great concept to express. You can see what I'm talking about on this page that talks about electrons making this leap: http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/circuits/U9L3a.cfm

IMPORTANT: I've had to put them in some kind of order, but really the top 4 rankings - #1, #2, #3 and #4 - are all in joint first position in my opinion. I will be conferring with colleagues in the next 24 hours to get their input.

I LOVE the quality of Magnita's entries ... the only challenge is, I'm having a hard time reading the name! Breakthrough is the most important word and it's very hard to read. The graphics are incredibly ingenius! Kudos!

Again, I love the quality of Luke's work. As clean and sharp as it is, however, the graphic doesn't communicate anything. My brief explains that the Game is all about showing people how to get to a destination they REALLY want to get to. It's about movement, not going round in circles. That's what all of my preferred logos have in common.

Thanks for all your work - astonished at the quality and am referring all my clients and friends to this site. Your professionalism is also second to none.

Entries #24, #55 and #39 are, in my opinion, in joint first place. Really incredible ingenuity across-the-board. Jona's entry - #60 - would be right up there if the visual was a bit clearer. For example, there is just one North Star (which is significant in the Game). So it's not about stars in general. They just clutter up the sky and make it hard to see Polaris. Also, the boat is so tiny it's hard to make out what it is. It has to be really clear. People won't take the time to look consciously at the logo: it has to jump out at them. (This is also the case for Jona's other entry with the boat included in the visual.)

What follows is a message to Jona but is relevant to everyone, so I'm posting it here: I'm really curious to see what would happen if the picture part of the logo is incorporated (if possible) on the right hand side. in Jona's case, it's actually more do-able than with some of the other pictures. for example, the zig zag could intersect with the word 'Breakthrough' to show the boat going to a higher level. The benefit of integrating the picture on the right hand side is that the logo doesn't become so wide that it has to be shrunk down (which makes it hard to see the details of the picture.)

I'm really having a hard time choosing the 'winner' out of all of these and may extend the competition by 3 days - esp since I am traveling to Europe at the weekend and want to make sure my jetlag doesn't interfere with my decision! I also want to make sure my colleagues' votes are registered. I will most definitely use more than one logo as there are several purposes/future websites unfolding in the future. Not sure about the protocol regarding that, but I want you all to know that I appreciate all of your efforts, and even if you do not win my business this time, I will be referring a lot of people to you based on your skills and professionalism.

Many thanks

FYI I'm putting some logos into the 'not interested' box purely because of 1 of 2 reasons:

1. The color scheme does not match the four colors on my website (black/white/grey/ice blue)
2. The name of my brand 'The Breakthrough Game' is being broken up using different fonts which make it appear to be three separate things, not one concept. It's OK to experiment with fonts, as long as the fact that it still communicates as one entity. You will see that some designers have managed to do that. If in doubt, play with color but keep the whole phrase in the same font. We're also seeming to prefer upper case, but that's only because whenever someone submits lower case it's in a super round, bouncy looking font that makes it look to playful and not serious enough.
3. If you make the name The Breakthrough Game big, remember that as we shrink the logo, the picture will be harder and harder to distinguish/understand so that the boat will look like some kind of hard-to-distinguish blob. That's another reason why some absolutely brilliant designs haven't made it into the top 5.
4. Please work on the assumption that what's in our top 5 is all in the running for #1 spot: we are a team of people with me at the helm and I'm responding with my preferences but needing to reflect those of my colleagues also. We've extended the deadline to allow for that.

Many thanks for all your hard work. Much appreciated.
