What I think is great about this design is its subjectivity -- that because it creates a level of optical illusion, it's seen differently by differently by different viewers. Having a subjective attachment to a design makes it memorable, and because you deal in HCI, this is even more impactful. Though there are definite conventions in human computer interaction that are repeatable and observable, each user's experience is different based on all types of variables.
