Hi Satto! Thanks for your submission. I WISH we could take #54 with the Canadian tartan--wouldn't that be just perfect. There are two reasons we cannot take any tartan designs. First, each tartan is associated with a clan and we cannot associate the organization with one clan. Second, even if we used the so-called Canadian tartan (there is one), it is very difficult to reproduce with consistent colours on all the materials.
I have two suggestions. First, choose a typeface that is more defined, more specialized, or stronger and more sophisticated. Second, try a design that might connote the kilt, the safety pin that goes with the kilt, or the fringe you might see on a kilt. On the other hand, we might end up choosing a logo that does not have a identifying symbol but a new one that develops its own association with the client--like Nike's mark, for example. So try anything.
Finally, get playful. While keeping it simple, give the design motion.
I'm affraid the safety pin will be too "punk" and the thistle too common... I see that some famous schools in US have got their own tartan... why don't you? It is a "remarkable quality label"! I can create YOURS with the colors you'll tell me... Anyway, if You don't like this idea, I'll try to put a (dark blue) thistle inside a (red) mapple leaf... and give motion to that.... see me... Thanks for your comments, Satto.
Your leaf-thistle picture in #84 is the BEST one I have seen yet, and I have seen DOZENS and DOZENS!! You integrate them perfectly, retaining their symbolic significance while simplifying them to the absolute essence. Wonderful!!
If we can build on this....
COLOUR The client is looking for something playful, animated and vibrant, using 3 vibrant colours. It needs an injection of yellow. The red needs to be more vital, perhaps more fiery.
TYPEFACE Note the submissions of Ongyudicandra and Babo for the two kinds of typefaces that I would like. Either very simple and streamlined sans serif OR a strong and sophisticated serif.
SHAPE Can you give the picture a twist, or a shadow? It needs to look playful.
Hi Laurie, Here's another one #174 Scottish seeds (sons!) speading everywhere in Canada... an idea of the future. Hope you'll like it, best wishes, Satto.
