Dear all that have contributed: THANK YOU!
One very remarkable trait of SMS is that our children are very awake at Night and need naps through the day. Just for inspiration - if you can come up with ideas of how to illustrate this.

Hello hesselundstrom,

I have researched this a bit but cannot find a conclusive answer: Is SMS categorized in the autism spectrum? Does the 17p11.2 deletion always have autistic characteristics?

The reason I ask is that the puzzle piece or missing puzzle piece is the renowned symbol for autism. If these two anomalies are not 100% associated, can this cause any confusion and/or alienate the target market?

Can you please clarify this, I want to be sure that I understand this. :)

Thank you.

Hi Night Owl and all

The major difference between the autism spectrum diagnosis and Smith-Magenis is that Smith-Magenis Syndrom is a deletion in the chromosomes - with a piece of one of the chromosome-17 pair missing. So Smith-Magenis can be diagnosed genetically (this is not the case with ASD). We thought of the missing puzzle piece as a symbol of the missing part of chromosome 17. I don't see it as a problem that the symbol is associated with ASD - there are many similarities in the challenges. The one thing that really distinguishes SMS kids/people is the fact that they don't sleep much at night but are tired in the daytime. I hope that this is useful. Joakim
