Color Preferences
I am open to color, but do not want anything loud and neon bright. The logo should look good on a white background, as well as a dark gray or black background. I was thinking of a black/red color scheme, but it should also look good in the opposite white/blue color scheme. Again, I am open.
Our Ideas & Additional Information
The name of the company is ScorpioSense. As such, I want a scorpion in the logo. The tail should be up and ready to strike. I was thinking of semi-circles coming from the head of the scorpion, gradually increasing in size the further from the scorpion they get (similar to radar or sound waves, e.g. in most volume controls). These will indicate that it can sense danger.

Additionally, the winner will most likely also be elected to develop another logo for another, non-profit company, ScorpioSamaritan. The two logos should be nearly identical, but the ScorpioSamaritan logo will not have the radar sense, but instead will have a halo, and perhaps a different color scheme (e.g. black/red vs. white/blue).

I want nothing with rough edges. The logo should be polished and completely vector-based. I do like shading, but simplified shading, much like the Firefox logo or the Apple logo.

dapc79 (#14 and #15) -- thank you for remembering that I want my logo to look good regardless of the background color; it is simple and very easy to change colors in the future, so I like that. However, the tail may be too thin and dragon-like -- I might prefer it to look more like a scorpion, a bit thicker, sturdier, and with joint articulations as in http://www.scorpion.com/scorpion.jpg
Also, you were right on about the radar semi-circle thing, but I'm not sure about the placement -- it looks like it is coming from the claws, whereas I think I would prefer just one (not two) coming from the head area.

bamsite (#12) -- I like the abstracted simple approach (#9 and #10 looked like dragons, not scorpions, so I removed them). However, as I mentioned, this logo will need a variant for my non-profit venture, scorpio samaritan. So, I need to be able to modify the scorpion a bit, so maybe integrating it into the name is not such a good idea. If you could break it apart and perhaps do the little radar wave things like dapc79 did, that might work better.

JoyBlue, #2 and #3 look too rough and cartoonish...especially because of the eyes, but I think it could be cleaned up in general, made more elegant. Also, the waves should be coming from the scorpions head, not his mouth -- it looks like he's yelling or vomiting. Also, I don't like gradient backgrounds, and I'm not sure why the letters I and O are red in #3. It shows promise though.

thebomber99 (#21), I like the glossy coloring. If you could make the tail and body of the scorpion look more like a scorpion that would be better. Also, I don't like the archaic font for this particular business. Something more standard, web-friendly would be better...perhaps a simple sans-serif, or very slightly serifed font.

Mogeek (#1), I actually like the idea, it's very clean, reminiscent of a scorpion, your take on the little flash around the tail works well. However, the color scheme is confusing, and it's very difficult to tell that it is a scorpion. Try making the background color all the same color. Also, if you could try taking it out of the circle, just to see an alternative, that would be great.
