any way to get the left side of the "R" more definite and less "optical illusion"

What about this? The shape is enclosed into a smooth rectangle to define the R shape.

just a predominately vertical thin line on left side of river to create the R. not a box of color

can you make the vertical left hand side at a slight angle - where the top is approx 1:00 o'clock and the bottom at 7:00 o'clock. the thin vertical line entry 128?

or a slight curve to the line bowed in toward the center of the river making the whole widest at the bottom and narrower at the top. almost the opposite of #126
