#1. Clever use of PV module in PV letters, font looks good, would like to see version without shadow. Fading colors in "Measurements" aren't silkscreenable, so we'd like to have an additional version with solid colors. Solar cells in PV aren't silkscreenable either, so the silkscreenable version would need solid PV.

#2 and #3: Measurements is misspelled. Font is too plain. Would need a solid-color version of the sun for silkscreening. Version #2 is better than #3 because it is more compact. We prefer a logo that is closer to being square than the current one which is wide and rectangular.

#5 and #6 are compact - I like this. I like the sun in these. I don't understand the lightning bolt, the arrows or the squares though. The squares gave me the idea that it might be possible to incorporate the typical shape of an I-V curve (very common measurement result format) into the logo. There's one at http://www.pvmeas.com/ivtester.html#ivms (the black curve, not the red one).

Another technical feature that could be incorporated is the graphical representation of the photovoltaic effect: A photon entering a solar cell generates a hole and an electron. A friend's company logo incorporates this; you can see it at http://www.sintoninstruments.com/. Or google "photovoltaic effect".

The logo doesn't need to incorporate the I-V curve or the PV effect graphic; these are just ideas that might make the logo look scientific in a very relevant way.

Hi hfield,
You can click on any given design and that will take you to the designer's individual contest entry page. There you can scroll down to the comment field where you can comment on and hot-link to a design as you have been doing. Cheers, Steve.

For those of you who aren't familiar with laser-marking on black-anodized aluminum, look at #11. This is what #8 would look like when applied to the front panel of a piece of our equipment.
On our front panels, I would prefer #10 to #11.

The sun in #9 is rather intriguing. Inside the red flares, there are little white flares. It would be good if this logo could be made a bit more colorful and more compact.

Something I like about #2 is that somehow the way the lettering is arranged, it looks like the sun is in the background. It gives the logo depth.

Hello! Here are some hints for getting the most out of your contest:

~~ Rank designs daily -- this will encourage more participation.
~~ Ranking designs daily will also keep your contest from getting cluttered.
~~ The more feedback you provide, the better results you are going to see.
~~ Designers are not offended by "Not Interested"
~~ Over-use of "Not Interested" discourages participation.
~~ At contest close you will need to have 3 different designers ranked in the top three positions.
~~ Ranking is a non-monetary means of showing appreciation for designers hard work.
~~ Designers earn points for ranked designs. We like to earn points.

1st place - 50 points
2nd place - 20 points
3rd place - 10 points
4-6th place - 5 points
7-10 place - 3 points
10th on - 1 point

More detailed information on how to get the most out of your contest can be found here:

in #14 and #15 the PV is a bit hard to read.

I like how the newest entries are compact.

I'd be interested in seeing some entries where the P and V are less-emphasized over the Measurements. A logo could have the acronym PVM, for example. Or, the P and V could be larger than the M in Measurements, but just a little bit larger.

#2's sun appears to some here to be like a sunset. We prefer that the sun in the logos containing the sun appear more like mid-day sun or a sunrise to connote newness and excitement. #5, #6, and #14 are good in this respect.

I'd like to see a sun like the one in #16 in a compact format like in #18.

I'd like to see a sun like the one in #6 in place of the blue circle in #15 and perhaps this could be a background for the company name on 2 lines. I prefer the font in #5 to the font in #14 for the PV.

Thanks to NancyCarterDesign for the general suggestions and for the link to some additional suggestions. The tips indicate that designers generally add explanatory comments to their submissions. At this point, there have been 19 entries, but I have not seen any such comments. So does this mean that there were no notes provided by designers? Or do I simply not know how to access them?

I would really like to see some additional contestants enter my contest and for those who have entered to provide more variations on their ideas. I like the variety I have seen so far, but I think there could be more ideas out there. At this point, some logos are better than others, but I am not sufficiently happy with any one of them to put it to use. I'm hoping for more activity in the coming week.

The tips ask me to explain why a logo was put in the "Not Interested" category. So, here goes....
#1, #3, and #4 are too wide. I prefer a logo that is more compact. #16 is still in the ranks because it has a different kind of a sun, and the PV is not giant relative to the Measurements.
#11 has a black sun - when etched in black-anodized aluminum, the sun should be brighter than the background.
In #14 and #15, the PV is a hard to read.
In #19, there are these swirly things around the sun - I don't understand these. #18 is in the ranking because it has the Measurements under the sun, making it more compact.

We'd like to see a version of #8 with the blue changed to a darker shade or an alternate color.

We'd like to see a version of #13 with the PV smaller and inside a half of a rising sun above
Measurements, Inc. The line starting with "Instrumentation" can be removed.

We'd like to see a version of #2 with the PV a bit smaller. And another version with this change
and also the sun centered instead of off to the side.

Client
Employees met and re-ranked the logos. More importantly, they provided several ideas and comments.
#26 could use some flares around the sun. The "Instrumentation..." line can be removed.
#8 was well-liked because it stands out - is very different from most logos, and has a sun similar to the current sun.
#20 was well-liked because it puts solar cells into the sun. The "Instrumentation..." line can be removed.
There is a suggestion to put PVM in the center of the sun in #21 and remove "Measurements". If we use this configuration, we would put the company name separately or under the sun.
In #23 and #24, the P looks like an A until you figure it out. I like the colors, though.
A variation on #20 or #21 could be made that puts a semi-square solar cell in the middle with an I-V
curve over it (represents a measurement) and PVM next to it.
#5 and #6 were seen as having too much detail. And, some of the detail was not understood.

The sun used in #2 has turned up in one of our customer's logos. Also, the color looks like sunset and the misspelling is distracting.

Client
#32 is pretty cool with the line in the middle representing an I-V measurement. The right part
of the curve looks pretty good; the left side of the line should be almost horizontal; a tiny bit higher
on the left than on the right. We'd like to see a version of this with the triangles like the ones in #20
(size and color). And PVM could be blue like the center.
#31 is really eye-catching. At first it looks unbalanced, but on further inspection, it's quite symmetrical.
Quite memorable. We'd like to see PVM in the orange that PV is in, on the right or under the diamond.

Thanks, everyone, for the new entries!

#36...We'd like to see a version without the shadow. Also, there's a feature in the upper left
part of the "P" that I don't understand.
#51 is very catching. We like it a lot. But it has too much detail for the laser-marking in
black-anodized aluminum. We'd like to see a rendition of how it would look on the
aluminum. The globe is good to convey that the company's mission is about preserving
the environment. But for laser-marking, it might be too detailed. Perhaps a graph
of an I-V curve could go in there instead. See the black line in the curve at
http://www.pvmeas.com/ivtester.html#ivms for the shape of a typical I-V curve.

Hello everybody...
I understand there is some controversy about the I-V curve - that perhaps only one
contestant should be allowed to use it. I presented the idea to everybody, hoping that
everyone would look for ways to work it into the logo. If the rules prohibit this, then
please submit your logos without the I-V curve and then we'll add it later if we decide
that we want it in our logo (and we're not sure that we do!).
Thanks!

Thanks for all the new entries, everyone!
#58 and #59 went to NI because while the meter does indicate measurement of something, none of our equipment actually uses mechanical meters.
I like the action implied by the swirls around the globe in #64. The letters don't quite work though, because the company name is PV Measurements, Inc. not PVM Measurements.
#63 has a very distinguished sun, but I am concerned that it might be too detailed for the laser marker to reproduce it on black-anodized aluminum.
#55 has nicer (IMO) colors than before, and I like the overlapping PVM letters.
#61 has a cool, eye-catching font. I'd like to see a version with the m in the same font as the p and the v and maybe the asterisk could be put behind? Or in front and semi-transparent?
#57 has a new look and nice colors. I'd like to see some variations on it, but don't know what to suggest.
#43 has a very cool sun, but I'm concerned about the overlapping boxes around it. I wonder if something
else could go around it. Also, a version that has the company's initials instead of its full name would be welcome.

I'd like to see a version of #45 that has brighter triangles around it, and perhaps more triangles or more elongated ones.
#65 has great color and is very eye-catching. However, I'm concerned about how to work the shades into a silkscreenable logo and the detail into a laser-marked version. I'd like to see a simplified version of this logo. We would consider using the full-detail and full-color logo in our printed materials and simplified version on the equipment labels.

Client
I'd like to see a version of #82 that has blue squares instead of green.
I'd like to see a version of #43 that has a solid center to help us visualize a silk-screened implementation.

Client
I like "PVM" being inside the graphic as it is on #57. I would like to see a version of this logo with the blue squares in a darker color, more similar to actual solar cells.

Logos with a squiggle aren't so interesting to us. These are the ones where the squiggle forms an M or a V.

I guess the increase in entries is because we're an hour away from contest end. I'm having trouble keeping up with the ranking - sorry. The most-interesting ones I'm putting into the ranking.

#91 - #94 went to NI because the warped solar panel didn't appeal.
I'd like to see a version of #112 with something other than dots around it.
I'd like to see a version of #65 with blue ocean instead of green.
I'd like to see #119 with a bit more space between the P, V, and M, just enough so that these letters
will be distinguishable when laser-marked on black-anodized aluminum.

#124 and #125 went to NI because the ring around the earth looks a bit like paper in orbit. But I like the globe in these.

#129 went to NI because it looks kindof like the sun is sinking.

Thanks everyone!
We'll do some internal discussion and then pick the winner. It may take a couple days. It's going to be tough...
