Our Ideas & Additional Information
The National Archives primarily stores and provides access to documents (in addition to photos and videos... most are American treasures from the past but there are also present day records). So, inegrating documents or multimedia into their logo could work very well. For example, imagine more elegant versions of http://www.empgens.com/rw_common/images/trimmed.jpg (without the bookmark) and http://www.fcc.gov/ib/working_papers/images/working_papers_logo.gif (without the blue circle).
We would like a sophisticated looking logo with lots of versatility in terms of how and where it can be used. The logo needs to reproduce clearly at a height of no more that 80px. A new website design may be designed around this logo to some degree. Be sure to include the word "the" in the wordmark so that it reads "The National Archives". Also, try to avoid American flag themes since they are overused. We like the White House's logo on http://www.whitehouse.gov. Of course, logos that are distinct yet still authoritative like http://sportskate.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/fedex-logo.jpeg, http://www.citadel.edu (note that the Archives has a famous building too - the Archives in DC), http://www.lincolngreen.co.nz/webfiles/LincolnGreenNZ/webpages/images/27207/Museum_logo.JPG, and http://www.reuters.com, http://www.msn.com, are also good references.
