As I just found out - "A good rule is, if it has black on its head, it's a Showa, if not, it's Taisho Sanke. So, I guess, my koi is a stylised Sanke :)
I like that you are doing with equal weighting on the words in the logo. Please rotate the text clockwise approx 17° so that the M in midwest and d in pond are horizontally alligned. Have you tried this in title case with a little tracking?
"Midwest" is not more important than the other words. Can you try balancing differently? For example, "Midwest Pond" above and "and Koi Society" below?
I think the board members are looking for a more realistic representation of a koi. A good koi is powerfully built. The Mid-Atlantic Koi club (http://www.makc.com/) has been successful and you can itentify their specific variety, for example a kohaku an a shiru utsuri.
