keep in mind that your logo has to work well in all printed materials, and products, not just look pretty on the screen. Shadows and gradients will not look good when it's actually printed

Gradients print fine. They're all around you. It's also easy enough to create a solid color version of the design, so don't let other designers scare you away from a particular design because it has gradients.
