Hi CH. Here's the amended design as requested. The triangle wasn't a cone but was meant to signify a carry string. I never realised it could be interpreted as a cone. :0)
i didn't even realize that with #47. i like that carry string idea alot. could you incorporate a hand/fist carrying it from that string or some way to clarify it.
so first off thanks for the revision on #47. pretty awesome stuff.
i like #53 alot. it's a seemingly complicated logo but of simple subjects. i would like to see it with one lightbulb with dragonfly wings, instead of two. i think it'll feel a little less busy and draw the eye in print and on t-shirts, etc. and it'll be automatically recognizable from a distance. the run-off of glow works well in the design too; just with two it's like a fog one needs to differentiate through to make out the subjects.
i need to say i'm extremely impressed with your 3D work. you're very talented. i've looked at the stuff over on deviantART too. you got a great mind for depth and minutia. and i love that site btw. very motivating.
so, i've been looking at #54 with a new found interest since you mentioned the carry string. maybe it's not something i see here in the states or remember that much from childhood, but the idea of having fireflies in a jar collected by a little girl really speaks to me. and it signifies a lot about the logo, the film company, and the symbolism of ideas (i.e. light and lightbulbs, enlightenment).
i don't know if you play video games, but the trailer for "Bioshock 2" came out awhile back (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nj2hewPBQh0). in its opening, a little girl is holding a toy Big Daddy much like a teddy bear. the Big Daddies in the game are both enemies one fights and the protectors of these Little Sisters throughout the underwater city, Rapture.
anyway, i bring up "Bioshock 2" because of the visuals spawned by our conversation about the little girl's hand holding the carry string on the jar of fireflies.
i'm not saying to do anymore revision work on #54. i think at this point, it has A LOT of elements. any more additions might and probably would throw off the balance, composition, and simplicity of the logo.
but i want you to look at that video game trailer, see how that girl's arm lays and how that hand holds that toy. and if instead it was a design holding your jar of fireflies by the carry string. that's basically the visual that's been in my head most of the evening.
see if it inspires you to another design. the color palette, composition and placement of the logo, as well as the text, i have no real restrictions in my mind. you've been doing great with your black & white, so if it feels right to you, continue with it. if not, live your life. just make sure it maintains the balance you've demonstrated in your other designs. that's something i really like about your work.
again, thank you. i don't write this much feedback to anyone. ever. i've just been really inspired by your work and what you've made me think about.
Wow, that is some serious feedback. I wish all contest holders were as enthusiastic as you, it really inspires. With regards to Bioshock, it's one of the best games I've played, and being a games nut I've played a fair few. I'll do some amendments as requested and also have a look at that trailer too. My network is a bit twitchy at the moment so if I disappear for a bit don't worry, it's my internet playing up.
I've made the fireflies yellow in this one. I think it works pretty well. Btw, I see what you mean with the hand. I'll try and do something similar later today. All the best. :0)
#55 -- looks like an improvement with one bulb. i'm concerned with the glow of the bulb and the sheen glass reflection on the logo. i think that's where it looks foggy and a little hard to make out from a distance. is there a realistic place to move that reflection so they aren't overlapping? i like it asthetically, so i wouldn't want to lose it altogether. if you have any ideas to make it clearer...
#56 -- it's interesting with the yellow. it does address some of what i'm talking about above, but the overlapping is still there. i enjoy the black & white one more too.
#57 -- looks awesome. like the little tint of light "pastel" yellow.
Here I've done the bulb as the chamber with handprints suggesting that someone is inside bursting to get out. Perhaps a metaphor for the creative spark straining to be fulfilled?
just touching base tinderbox. i know you said your net was wonky. were you working on anything else? i know we talked about the girl holding the jar of fireflies. let me know. have a good one!
hey tinderbox. thanks for the new design. i like it, it's interesting. the glow on the hand too, love it.
i think we're running into a similar problem we had with #53, where it's hard to determine what that object on top is with a quick glance. this is through no fault of your own though. i think because it's a realistic hand it's hard to make out the details without studying it. you have the jar logo, which has a very other-worldly comic design, then the hand, which is photo real. plus, as it is disembodied, a viewer wouldn't instantly draw conclusions that it's a hand and a wrist. they would have to study the logo for a bit to make it out. it just isn't as instantly recognizable as i thought it would be.
i don't want to keep pushing this either. you've turned in some great work. there's no reason you should be spending this much time on a $300 contest. so trust me, i appreciate all the hard work and revising you've put in. let me think about the top 3 designs for a little while and get back to you.
I've really enjoyed going through the creative process on this one. Regardless of the outcome I've still got some work that I'm happy enough with to put in my portfolio and on my website. :0)
that's a great attitude to have. i've really enjoyed seeing your work. i hope to keep in touch with you and see what you're doing in the future. i've also recommended you to several other friends looking for company designs, so expect more business to come your way. thanks alot.
Wow, that's great. Thanks for the recommendations. It would be good to stay in touch, it's always nice to network creatively with like-minded people. I'm also fascinated to see how your film company evolves. All the best. :0)
#92 is a very cool design. i like the glow on the girl especially. the light bulbs in the bubbles aren't my favorite though.
#49, #54, and #58 are my top considerations right now. and there are elements of all three, including #92 now, that i absolutely adore. i've just been racking my brain to give you some accurate feedback about what would improve, if possible, any of those designs. or maybe what combination would fit the company perfectly, without hesitation.
#49 is engaging and even a bit creepy. and the tape, if that is like scotch tape on the ceiling holding the light bulbs -- hard to tell with a smallish thumbnail -- is unique. something i really love.
#54 i've said so much about already. love the iconic design, love the box holding the rays, love the jar. in fact, love the jar idea still the most. but the fist throws me off. and the realistic hand on the revision doesn't work for reasons i've explained.
#58 is extremely original. and it definitely keeps me coming back. i just don't know what keeps that from being my favorite. sometimes the words just aren't there, it's just a feeling.
i don't know. between the four designs, any of them really would prove to be unique and iconic. but, i'm having trouble being any more specific about criticisms. all of them are primo work, tinderbox.
actually on #96 could you bring that pinky just a little closer in? it seems like it's just poking out there hehe. and maybe adjust the hand a tad larger so the string hangs like it would from that altered hand?
not too much revision. you're 99% there. hope you don't mind. sorry.
