I really like your idea of using the G as the Compass (G as the shell for the Compass or Guide); lets try to use the L as the shell or arm for the scales, using either one scale or two scales off of the L; and then working them together or seperate for idea.

Trying Using the letter LG to make the compass, but Thicker or differnet Font style to achieve.
