Our Ideas & Additional Information
I would like a logo that uses a Zapf Chancery L (Laplace transform operator) and an "element of" set symbol (or maybe a lower case epsilon) and a line integral (integral sign with a circle) to spell LEF. See the graphic. I envision this being placed next to the words "Laughlin Engineering Firm, LLC" with possibly the words "Biomedical and Forensic Engineering" underneath that. To see more about what we do, go to www.laughlinfirm.com

That's my vision, I'm open to other ideas.

I'd mostly like to see what designers can do with the LEF idea. I'm open to other pertinent designs, but am looking for a looking for a logo that is professional. I'm not interested in typical symbols one might think of for this line of work - magnifying glasses, fingerprints, caduceus, or vitruvian man. (Well, maybe vitruvian man, but it would have to be simple without much detail, but obvious what it is.)

Hi! Here are some hints for getting the most out of your contest as it progresses:

~~ Rank designs daily -- this will encourage participation.
~~ Rank and re-rank a variety of designs to get a variety of new entries.
~~ Ranking gets your contest noticed! Unless your contest is private, 1st place entries are posted to the portfolio page: https://logotournament.com/portfolio
~~ Ranking designs daily will also keep your contest from getting cluttered.
~~ The more feedback you provide, the better results you are going to see.
~~ Designers are not offended by "Not Interested"
~~ Over-use of "Not Interested" discourages participation.
~~ Ranking is a non-monetary means of showing appreciation for designers hard work.
~~ Designers earn points for designs ranked in the top 10. We like to earn points.

~~ NOTE: While in JUDGING mode, the designer ranked in 1st can still submit revisions.

More detailed information on how to get the most out of your contest can be found here:

So far my favorite is number 4. I'd like to see the epsilon changed to an "element of" symbol about 1/3 or 1/2 height and centered vertically. My wife really likes numbers 5 and 6 with the play on the letters. I like it, too, but I'm not crazy about the font. I don't have any suggestions on how to improve it, but I might suggest a different font. Maybe one without the serifs or extension at the end of the lower part of the L.

Thanks, I think this is off to a great start. I really like what I'm seeing.

Here is what I want from this contest.

I submitted a graphic that has a basic representation of a logo I would like implemented. It has an upper case Zapf Chancery L and an "element of" symbol and a line integral symbol. These are mathematical symbols which represent each initial of Laughlin Engineering Firm.

The Zapf Chancery L represents the Laplace Transform, the element symbol is from set theory and the line integral is from calculus and the circle helps make it look like an f. I would like them to look good proportionately. I think the e, element symbol should be about 40 to 50% the height of the L, Laplacian, and centered vertically. The size of the line integral symbol should really be determined by aesthetics. Look them up or I can post some links to images if you like. The L doesn't have to be Zapf Chancery as long as its somewhat close to its typical representation.

I testify in the courtroom as an expert witness and I provide engineering support during the surgical implants of experimental medical devices. My clients trust me with a lot of responsibility and I want a logo that conveys to them integrity, intelligence and strength. My business cards are linen with raised text, to give you an idea about me. However, that doesn't mean I'm looking for Plain Jane, either - artistic expression is encouraged.

I think key words to think about in the design are engineering, biomedicine, forensics, science, trust,

My wife isn't crazy about my LEF idea, so please feel free to submit original concepts! The LEF concept is what I'm hoping for, though.

Thanks and please ask questions if you need to.

I'm glad to see more people working on the LEF idea. I ranked #4, by cre8tive means, because I think he's got the line widths down. He also uses the element symbol instead of the epsilon and I think I prefer the element symbol. The overall logo is not professional enough for me, but those are the elements I think are headed in the right direction.

I also think I like the letterform mark to the left of the company name, as opposed to being above the name or incorporated into it. I ranked Alexander's atomic first, because I'm a nerd who likes atoms, but it's a little flowery for my taste. I like the concept and would like to see it refined to a more. I'm not sure it's where I ultimately want to head, but something closer to a classic Rutherford atom would be very cool.

While I want to encourage development of the atom logo, I don't want to discourage other letterform mark ideas. The think I like about #7, by DesignLab, is that it's not picture framesque. It is different (like I suppose so is the atom). Creative, yet professional, LEF letterform marks to the side of the company name are greatly encouraged. I hope this helps everyone, thanks!

I keep looking at #15. The element symbol needs thinner lines and maybe a slight reduction in height, but the line reduction might do it. I like the company name and the slogan. I imagine I'd want something close to that for the final. My business cards are in Georgia font, which is very similar to that. I don't like the blue bar with the LEF on top, but I do like the LEF with the sunburst, a lot. Having an LEF like that on the side would be cool. It would be interesting if the LEF was in white and the sunburst was in color, so it faded into the background instead of into a surrounding box. I do like the box, though. Or another shape, maybe. I appreciate the efforts on the atom. I don't think the LEF and the atom go together, it's one or the other. More on the atom below. Cre8tive, I do think you're onto something that will be a finalist with a little rearranging and retouching of the elements of 15. Thanks for all the effort.

Other ideas I have had since starting this contest is the company name and slogan in a font that looks Greek or like it's been chiseled into stone with the atom on the side. That would be sort of a classic thought vs. modern technology contrast.

The company name will likely be pretty easy to hone. I'm thinking much like several above that it's in a font like Georgia, or Georgia, with the Laughlin above Engineering Firm, LLC - equally as wide as Laughlin and the LLC is the same font size as Eng Firm. Maybe the slogan goes below that.

For new people hoping to enter something. I attached a graphic with a slogan idea, which you can read about above. In the image, the top one is the one I like best. If you can come up with a unique way to display that as a letterform mark next to the company name, that would be good.

Thanks!

Thanks for all the submissions. I took a deep cut ranking this morning, because we're getting closer to the end and some are standing out. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

My favorite LEF symbol is still number 15, but the line width of the E needs to be thinner and the top bar placed to the side of the company name. I know I said sunburst and maybe that's not the right term. Starburst? Whatever that effect used behind the LEF in number 15 is called, I like it. It would also be interesting if it were inverted, such that what I'm calling a starburst doesn't fade into a box, but rather into the paper.

My wife really likes number 32. I do too. She likes the creativity taken with the LEF, but I think it might be too much. The LEF symbols are mathematical symbols, so I'm thinking it should look more like an equation, but maybe not if it's pleasing to the eye. I prefer the element of symbol over the epsilon. The element of symbol looks like a trident on its side and the epsilon looks like a backward 3.

Number 39 is very cool. Other than the epsilon, I wouldn't change much, but it would be nicer if the LEF stood out more. I also like number 38, the atom behind the double helix is appropriate. It's not quite there, yet, but I'm sorry, I can't put my finger on what it is I'd change. It would be interesting to see the hexagon with the LEF in it.

My wife and I both like #6, too. She pointed out that it is reminiscent of two shaking hands, which it an interesting way to look at it. She likes the font used for the symbol, I'm not sure I do, though.

Thanks, everyone!

Anybody wanting to get a design in during the eleventh hour, here's what I'm seeing and liking. Well, the top 8 for sure. Please read the comments. I think I'm sold on the LEF in math symbols idea. Check out the attached graphic. I'm partial to the element symbol, but use the epsilon, for now, if it's easier. I like the sciency benzene feeling of the hexagon, but I also like the atom. I have appreciated the creative takes on the LEF, but I think something more literal so they look like math symbols. At this point, I don't really care about the company name, the letterform mark is really what I suppose I'm concerned about. Purple is my favorite color and I've been appreciating that. Feel free to use blue or gray, too. Thanks for all the effort!
