1) Lateral thinking is "is solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic"

2) A lateral fault is a type of geologic (strike slip) fault. Gold deposits occur where these faults turn and bend. On the attached image, this is shown in the right example in the area labeled "pull-apart basin".
