Thanks for submitting the 2-color 3D. That part is exactly what I was trying to describe. I like the un-shaded background, so I'll just reference #80. The S is a little too overt for me. Instead of the end-caps on the "S" maybe let it blend into the gear, so it looks more like a design feature of the gear (might even be able to get the "I" in there too, but it may look to busy)
Simplicity is great, colors are great. All that's really missing is some gesture toward data processing/technology.
I know its probably too late for an entry, also mare seems to have nailed it for you. but this icon would not leave my head until I'd done it the way I'd love to see it. So I have to get this out, I'm happy now :)
The gear represents the machine the inside represents the tech part and its simple with no blends.
can you make one like #192, but with the view from the direct left, instead of the bottom left, so that it ends up making the teeth at the top and top bottom of the gear as also being the bit squares, then a grid of them like #131 (while still leaving a the circumference of the gear clear, to imply the remainder of the gear? This could be a contest winner.
#200 is exactly what I was thinking. I think it really works, do you?
I don't know what's involved with adding a couple more teeth to the gear, but I think it would help. The 10-12 tooth sprockets seem to hit the sweet spot between busy and clear for me. Also, ideally the bits near the gear can be out-of-grid to support the illusion of the complete gear, and the ones near the logo should be flush/on-grid. In between can do whatever it needs to to smooth the transition. Bit count is good, but I know with a few more teeth, we'll probably get a few more bits.
But, even so, I have ranked ranked this #200 as first on purpose (though it makes me sick to think mare won't get a gold out of this, after all the work (s)he has done).
I don't know the procedure, but hopefully we'll be able to fine-tune after the contest.
