What We Do

Defend the Heart of the Fraser is an advocacy campaign aimed at protecting important wetlands and islands in the lower Fraser river valley, near Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. The area provides vital habitat for wild Pacific salmon, sturgeon, and other species of high social, economic, ecological, and cultural importance. The area is also important for recreation and it is being threatened by development.

Target audiences are: local citizens who enjoy outdoor recreation, recreational and commercial fishers, local Indigenous Nations that rely on the area for salmon and other values, and local residents concerned about flooding.

There are some great logos so far. One thing that would improve even the frontrunners is a human element, to show that we are not just defending nature, but the human connection with nature. The logos showing a heart provide somewhat of a human element, but there are mixed opinions among the selection committee as to whether the heart might be off-putting for the more masculine fishing/hunting element who are an important part of our core audience. So while we are still interested in options showing a heart, we would also like to examples of the human element without the heart.
