Separate "D" not required, colours need to compliment each other eg #3 and #4 work better than #1 and #2 (see updated brief for colour suggestions, open to other colours as well). Graduation hat could sit on an angle on the letter "D" instead of straight on top.

I like the use of the graduation hats with heads #8.

#12 is getting there, try a red and white scroll instead of the book, maybe also put something in the pages like a mouse, also instead of a book maybe a class of heads with hats so 5 in total (3 then 2 then 1 with the 1 a different colour say red and white or something that makes it stand out).
