We've used a black/white font-based logo in the past, but I'm not sure that I have any strong feelings on colors at this point.

Discussion

Designers: Thank You for considering us! Briefly, what we do is build airborne mission management systems. We invented the field of augmented reality mapping systems (see http://www.churchillnavigation.com/media/videos/37-flir-star-safire to see what our product looks like in the air) and continually push the bounds of the possible. Our systems are used in an environment where life and death may be at stake, and our products are designed to ensure the best possible outcome.

While our products are primarily used by law enforcement, we don't want to play up that angle too much (no police hats, etc.) as we cater to a variety of end users. All of our products are used in the air -- either in helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft.

Our products are top of the line, costing more than our competitors, but deliver a great deal of value for the money. They are rugged (have to survive -40 degree temperatures while being shaken in a helicopter), easy to use, and mission-critical.

With regards to logos, we probably want something that scales fairly well -- graphics that are too busy (especially with a long company name like ours) may not look good when printed small or sized appropriately for the web. Conversely, we will also be featuring our logo on trade-show booths where it will be large.

While it can be multi-colored, it should also render well in black and white -- for instance, we will probably want to laser-etch it onto the product case as well. (Which is black anodized aluminum)

Best Wishes,

Tom,

The product, is it hardware or software based or both?

Thanks for the quick start, folks.

Scott: The product is both -- we sell a military ruggedized computer system that gets installed in the aircraft and interfaces to the surveillance camera/s, but the real value is in the software.

Byway of some early feedback, logos that feature a 'C' or 'N' probably aren't what we are looking for. We tend to like the word 'CHURCHILL' made more prominent, and 'NAVIGATION' (which is not really what we do, but is in the company name largely for historical reasons) less prominent. Towards this goal, designs #8,9, and 17 all accomplish that.

The other desirable attribute is that they have an aviation theme, without being too "airplaney". Designs 10 and 11, for example, feel to me like we might be an airplane manufacturer (like Cessna or Boeing).

However, about 1/2 of our customers fly helicopters, so something even a little more generic than a fixed-wing airplane could be even better. (Avalex, for example, ( http://avalex.com/ ) uses propellers -- which I don't think are necessarily what we want, but are more generic)

Another theme element that could be incorporated would be surveillance. Our customers use long-range gyro-stabilized cameras to catch the bad guys: It maybe possible to incorporate some elements that suggest this into the design (again, without it being too over-the-top; though I know this is a difficult thing to convey)

A few more comments:

raduzis: I like #37, but maybe replace the crosshair lines which are currently triangles with small rectangles ( like design 23)

trinova: I like the location of the eagle in design 20 (in the second 'C'), but would like it in black & white like #19
