Our Ideas & Additional Information
This logo will be the front and center representation of an online campaign we are running called "Take Back Your Privacy." We're not exactly looking for "slick" and refined but something "empowering," something that can live on a bumper sticker, T-shirt or be stenciled on a mailbox. Stay away from crisp, square corners (but don't go overboard with rounded corners, either.) Graphic representations of personal data can in the background, we're open to ideas. We would like our organization's logo (see attached) to be represented like the example from EFF(see attached); however; instead of black set the logo and url against a white background. You do NOT have to include the organization's tag line. The campaign slogan is: "Take Back Your Privacy" and must be incorporated with the logo.

Well, glad to see we have at least one entry! Let me comment on #1. The color scheme if fine, in that it tracks with the colors in our logo. However, we don't want (or need) the logo and tagline (keeping the Internet open, innovative and free) so prominent. This should be reserved in a space along the bottom 1/3 or 1/4 of the logo design. In addition, the CDT logo MUST be exactly as is seen in the uploaded example. We've just had that organization logo redesigned and to deviate from it would make someone's head explode. :)

We also need the campaign tagline: "Take Back Your Privacy" represented.

Thanks, looking forward to seeing more.

Number 2 from DesignLab really starts to hit the mark. I like the integration of the yellow from the supplied color palette (though I think I'd prefer one of the darker shades--sans the purple). Also, because this is a campaign, the "Take Back Your Privacy" tagline should be bitter than the CDT logo.

This is a very clean design; I'd also like to what could be done if the clenched fist were a bit "distressed" as well and the "Take Back Your Privacy" tagline in a slightly distressed font as well. Now, I'm no typographer by a long shot, so if having a distressed font and logo combined with the clean CDT logo just makes the design experts want to throw up, just tell me here in the comments. I'll supply the rigorous honesty on my feedback from my end; feel free to push back if you feel what I'm asking for is just a disaster waiting to happen.

Looking forward to subsequent submissions.

Nicely done on this round. I'm gonna have to pull my colleagues into the mix now that we're starting to get a variety of designs. I like the layout of #5 and #6 top to bottom with the addition of the margin that frames the entire logo. I don't like the bent corner in #5.

DesignLab (#2 and #14) try putting the "Take Back Your Privacy" on top of the CDT; I don't think you have to include the words "Center for Democracy & Technology" in the design. I do like the type LAYOUT of "Take Back Your Privacy" in #14, with the word "privacy" prominent, but I don't like the font.

I would encourage the submission of "clean" designs (see #2) as well as distressed.

Mogeek: I'd like to see more forearm in the logo, looks too "stubby" right now. Also, I like to see the design with the fist actually clinching the string of "0s" and "1s" .

Also, I don't care for the one squared off corner as in #12 and #13.

ch, do we have to use only the colors from your given cdtpallette?
some hex code colors translate different colors than shown.

Nexus -- thanks for your entries and interest in the contest. I just rechecked the hex codes and they all look correct to me, which one(s) are not presenting correctly? But to answer your question, yes, the CDT palette does need to be followed. Also, when writing out CDT's full name, please use the "&" symbol instead of the word "and" --thanks

The latest entries, #15 and #16 are pretty far off the mark from what we want.

And just to clarify, I like the clenched fist represented in #15, but I'm not wedded to it as the end all be all. For example, I also like the fist represented in the DesignLabs entries #2 and #14.

I like the design revision's made in #21. I'd like to see that design scheme (#21) adapted to the color and layout of #5 (minus the bent page). I'd like to see #21 also in a distressed format. I'd like to see what Mogeek can do with the design by making "privacy" the predominate word, as is shown in #14 and #17.

I also like the direction DesignLabs is taking in #18.

I'm not sure about the "ray" effect in the submissions #21 and #22. I like it and would like to see it kept around, but some of my other folks might not, so I'd like to see that background more abstract.

The contest is going well, very pleased with progress. Thanks all--even those that I've passed on--for submitting entries. Again, if you can come up with a scheme that doesn't involve the clenched fist but still is representative of "take back your privacy" I'm open to it. #17 is an attractive design and layout, but the barbed wire'd @ sign doesn't convey the "take back your privacy" theme to me.

Thanks, Mogeek, for the latest crop of design submissions. I'll get back to these in more detail later tonight or early morning.

I'll get to more comments later this morning (it's now 5:30 a.m. in my time zone). Excuse me for not seeing this right off, but can you tell me what the difference is, Mogeek, between #32 and #33 and again, between these two: #3 and #4. Maybe I just need some coffee, but I'm failing to see any differences.

I hope DesignLabs doesn't fade away in the home stretch here. :) Our meeting of the campaign team is late this afternoon (U.S. east coast time) and we'll be looking over all the submissions... as they say, "anything can happen," so get in those late entries and stay tuned!

OK, I've done another ranking. Unless there's a specific question, or an urgent need, I'm going to hold off any more comments until after our late afternoon meeting. At that time I hope to have a much better handle on the direction we're heading with the logo. Stay tuned.

At our meeting yesterday, a problem came up with regard to using the clenched fist imagery... not sure if it's a "fatal" problem (as in "re-do") but will check in as soon as I know. That said, #44 and #45 are looking good

There was a lot of support for DesignLab's version #18; however some wanted to see a different background color (the font is excellent) and no distressed fist... The "ray" effect that Mogeek placed in the design was nearly universally panned, so nix any "ray" effect.

I'm seeing if I can extend the contest another two days to garner more entries that move away from the fist imagery. Maybe an abstract graphic "mark" of some kind that wraps in the idea of "taking back your privacy" and contains the "Take Back Your Privacy" tag line (and the CDT logo).

I guess the bottom line is: once again, it's a jump ball.

HEADS UP ALL DESIGNERS: there's been an internal rebellion here at CDT and any logo with the fist imagery is HIGHLY UNLIKELY to be used. That includes the creative efforts in #50 and #51... and while I'm on those two images, the "C" in CDT MUST be grey, as in our uploaded sample, NOT black.

There is a day and three hours to come up with new designs that do NOT include a clinched fist -- all efforts sincerely appreciated. No fists, no "rays" ... let's see what else is the creative tank. Thanks.

Dear Ch
You can leave individual comments on the designers page by clicking on their respective entries, that when we receive an email notification, whilst you can leave general comments right here - thanks for understanding.

Thanks, Mare, for the info on directly commenting to the designers; I've now done with for several designs.

Thanks, all, for these last minute design submissions. I think many of these will be real contenders. I am NOT to going rerank until after the contest is over; when we've picked a winner I will rank the entries one last time.

Can someone tell me how many entries I should actually rank? I'm not sure how designers actually get "points" beyond the fourth place ranking, but if there are points to be granted well beyond fourth place, I'm happy to do so in order to show appreciation for the great participation here.

Oh, and we are under a tight time frame on this contest so I GUARANTEE that we'll pick a winner by early next week; we won't leave you hanging around waiting for a decision.

Dear Ch
As far as my best understanding goes ..
This is how points are distributed:
1st place - 50 points
2nd place - 20 points
3rd place - 10 points
4-6th place - 5 points
7-10 place - 3 points
But its best you are appraised by LT staff. And do please remember that Only the #1 ranked designer ( who so ever you have currently ranked ) can submit newer entries ( or those that you want changes) during judging mode.

Hope it helps

And...
11th+ places = 1 point each
So...feel free to rank as many as you feel were in the running...or, that you liked.

Cheers,

OK, we are currently running the entries by our "judging panel" and hope to have chosen a winner by the day's end. As you can see, the preferences shifted dramatically once more folks here got involved in the process. Again, thanks to all who took the time to participate.
