What We Do

We are a justice-focused community organizing coalition in Knoxville and Oak Ridge, two cities in East Tennessee. This coalition is made up of congregations, unions, and community groups.

Color Preferences

Orange, Brown, Yellow. We are a multi-cultural coalition, including African-American, Middle Eastern, and Latino people, as well as White people. So, important to reflect vibrancy and diversity in our colors and design.

Our Ideas & Additional Information

The main idea is that we are many communities joining together as one to exert political force that will bring more justice to our region. So a design that reflects unity from diversity, strength, impact, etc., is good.

Generally, I'd like the slogan "Strong & United" integrated into the design.

ACT East Tennessee is an organization dedicated to social change, so I'm curious to see designs that have not only solidity in the lettering, but also vibrancy, urgency. I don't know if this means italics, with a forward lean? Or a kind of rawness. We want to establish ourselves as powerful, so I don't want it to look chaotic, but we are agitating the status quo, so something that looks disruptive would capture the spirit of the effort. "East Tennessee" is only a qualifier of "ACT," so "ACT" should be much more predominant and central to the text, with "East Tennessee" only in a supporting role. It may even be that "Strong & United" is larger than "East Tennessee."

One more note on the "vibrancy" and "urgency" I mentioned. We're not wanting only to disrupt things in East Tennessee. We want progress. We want things to improve. To move forward. So, along with the urgency, a design that suggested real progress would be good.

Curious to see options that incorporate the geographic shape of the state of Tennessee, or else of East Tennessee. Curious also to see what options with a rising sun would look like--something to signify "a new day" or "hope." Maybe even a rising sun over the state of Tennessee, to represent a new day in our State. (But that might be too complex an image) . Thank you for your work!

If not the State of Tennessee, another iconic element of our region is the Smoky Mountains. I don't want to get too much into nature, because we are about "social justice," and solidarity among people (rather than being a particularly environmental organization). But at the same time, I want to make sure that this is specifically branded as something from East Tennessee, from THIS region, and couldn't be just a generic social justice organization from Ohio or France. Thanks, everyone!

East Tennessee is a conservative, traditional region. We are a progressive, leftist organization. Somehow, showing that creative inter-play between the old/traditional and the new/emerging could capture something of this organization.

The logos with bold colors and some contrast colors are standing out.

Clear and easy-to-read letting is helpful.

I know there's only an hour left in the competition, so if this can't be done, so be it. But a team-member is asking whether the whole name, "Alliance for Community Transformation," can be integrated into the design, along with the acronym "ACT." I ask this knowing it's a lot, and I want to respect you all as artists, and the time and care it takes to create, so if you're not able to integrate these words at this late hour, we understand, and respect your work.
