Town of Burns Harbor
Founded in 1967, the Town of Burns Harbor takes great pride in being nestled between industry and nature. Burns Harbor is known for the Art of Green Living which ties its steel heritage over fifty years to today’s scenic treasures of the Indiana Dunes National Park, the East Branch of the Little Calumet River and the Marquette Greenway trail system. Halfway between downtown Chicago and Michigan’s Harbor Country is Burns Harbor, Indiana at I80/94 exit 22A/B. Residents are community-minded, industrious, family-oriented, outdoorsy, and active people with a tendency to stay here all their lives. Though it is a steel town defined today by ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor plant, Burns Harbor hosts several unique, locally owned and operated small businesses from eateries like the Brown Bag, Fresh Express, Bibi’s Bites to Curley’s custom motorcycles. The Town and its partner, Holladay Properties, are developing a new mixed-use community called Westport. The Westport neighborhood brings a social center to a community that lacks a formal downtown. The Westport will be anchored by the Marquette Greenway, a tri-state trail system that spans from Illinois to Michigan as well as a community center and town hall. The Burns Harbor Westport Development will feature 4 upscale multi-family apartments, 7 town home buildings, the Burns Harbor Town Hall and Community Center and a variety of smaller commercial and mixed-use residential opportunities to follow. Westport is Burns Harbor’s opportunity to enrich people’s sense of place and connection between the built, industrial, and natural world. The future of Burns Harbor is welcoming, a place of green living with high connectivity. By design, Westport is destined to be the place where everyone gathers. Westport should attract a range of millennial renters, homeowners, and business owners or others looking for an urban lifestyle in suburbia. Whether it is a family that has always been here, a commuting newcomer that wants an urban lifestyle in nature, an international recreational cyclist grabbing lunch, area kids gathering to play basketball or Chicagoans paddling in from Lake Michigan, Westport is the premier destination in Burns Harbor.
