Harris County Pets Resource Center
Harris County Animal Shelter primarily serves the residents and pets of unincorporated Harris County. Harris County is the most populous county in Texas and the third most populous county in the United States with an estimated population of 4.4 million. Harris County Animal Shelter is a division of the county’s Public Health Department, services we provide, include: • Low-cost pet wellness clinic for the public • Zoonotic disease surveillance for the County • Animal control services in neighborhoods throughout unincorporated Harris County and with certain municipalities within Harris County. • Animal cruelty investigations • Pet education and outreach • Robust adoption program • Foster and Volunteer programming • Animal transport program to adoption placement partners in other states As the county’s municipal shelter, we are required to accept every animal that comes through our doors regardless of breed, temperament, health conditions and circumstances. On average, we receive from the community 40-60 animals per day and average over 18,000 per year. Despite these challenges, in 2019 we have averaged over 90 percent live-release for the animals in our care through our lifesaving programming.
