I'm a former professional dancer who, 30 years ago, made the transition from the performing arts to business. I began to sell, install, and configure accounting software for small businesses. I didn't know what consulting was but my clients wanted me to consult to them. They wanted me to help them figure out the best way to use the software. So, I started helping them in the only way I knew how, as a dancer. We would experience the software together. They would tell me how they imagined it working for them, I would experience their vision, and I would try to configure the software to do what they desired. We would experience that result together, make discoveries, and new ideas would come out. We would continue that process until they were using the software. I never provided my customers training. It wasn't necessary. By the end of the process, they knew the software. I never documented anything. That also wasn't necessary since everything was there in the system. And, the process didn't take long since we never talked about things in the abstract. Together, we envisioned what we wanted, we tried it, we learned from the experience, we evolved our vision, we tried it again, and we continued iterating until it was right. This is how dances are made; following an organic process that is as old as man himself. It works because this is how we learn everything from the time we are small children. Today, I have evolved this process into a set of proven methods and practices that I use to help organizations evolve and improve systems. I call this methodology: JamFlow.
