Is it acceptable to notify a designer, through PM, of your contest after reviewing their portfolio and respecting their work?

I haven't found anything to lead me to believe that this is against any policies... but didn't know if it is frowned upon or offensive or what...

As I read through the forums, it seems like there are several, what I call in my circles, "social rules" and want to make sure that I don't rub anyone the wrong way.

Nope - perfectly legal :) - in general it is best to invite those that you truly like their style - it will improve your chances of getting a logo you will love. Give examples of the one's that you like best in their portfolio so that they know which style you are looking for.
