My contest is going well (planning to close early, thank you for the help LT) and I have some great designs, but when I look at the designer's pages I sometimes see that they have used very similar designs in other contests. In one case the designer has actually won a contest using a very similar design. Are we still going to be OK on copyright if I take that design? What is the view of LT and of other designers on this?

Yeah, as long as the similar logos have never won a contest, you will be safe to select them. If a logo has won before, the designer should know better than to submit something even remotely close again.
