is there a marking or something on shorter contests ?
seen a few that jump to selection right after open phase...

Just click the contest and look at the contest bar - the green thingy on the top. It will show something like this:

Open Phase >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Judging

Whilst normally it looks like this:

Open Phase >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Top 5>>>>>>>>>>Judging

..also, all contest are originally set to last the same length of time, no thing as shorter contests (or you guys hiding this from me) ;)
