I was curious if anybody could help me out a bit .. I have noticed that with quite a few of my submissions I have ranked in the top 10 (always the bridesmaid .. never the bride!). I just don't know what it is I can do to give my designs that extra 'push' they need for a first place. Is it my font choice? My color schemes? Too many effects? Too little effects? Thank you in advance to anyone who has any advice for me at all!

Your designs take up a lot of real estate. Reduce their size. Use more white space. The CH's often look for simple and clean. Also...enter a LOT of contests, and keep a strong file of unsold logos to enter.
