When selecting the type of mark - word, pictorial, abstract, etc... Do the designers prefer the freedom of choosing any style?
I'm wide open to suggestion, so I selected all the styles in hopes of getting a variety of entries. I plan on providing feedback along the way to assist in refining the design.

No, it doesnt matter, you would get all different varieties if you stated so in your brief.
As you guide them through, that will help alot, also ranking designs more often based on your most favourite prefferences until soemthing different and better comes out.

I have just checked your competition, i would suggest you say what you might be looking for in terms of certian medical symbols incorporated or if you can refference your competitor sites that you liked their logos for example and just outline what you might be looking for in general if you could.
