On second thoughts, maybe leave the gaps but ensure no gaps go directly through more than one layer, like a maze, and could you make the world look or have a sign of the internet.

I like this, the only thin is with the gaps it implies there is vulnerability in the networks/security, can you look at that sode of it, i think the easy option is to close the gaps but that would ruin the design a bit.
