Try making the SHAPE of the collar out of actual letters rather than simply writing the letters on the collar. Same thing for the hat version.

Rather than writing the letters ON the hat, try making the actual SHAPE of the hat our of the letters.

Could the letters be part of the coat collar or make up the shape of the crown of the fedora? Perhaps alternating black and white?
